Collapse AllWandsworth All Star Singles - Round 18 | Thursday 16 March 2017 to Wednesday 10 May 2017 (Midpoint: Wednesday 12 April 2017)
Thanks to everyone who got involved in this round, although turnout was mixed amongst the groups we still hit over a hundred matches played which is a good number. Congratulations to the new group champions and we hope to see you all next time for more matches in the warmer weather!
Group Summary:
A shame not to see more matches played in a quiet group one, particularly as those that were contested were very competitive affairs. Good scheduling made all the difference at the top of the table in this round. Tom, Andres and Jochen all recorded two wins each but crucially Tom bagged his bonus points too, to move into the lead. Andres and Jochen also miss out on the silver, as Stuart's battling performances and organisational skills give him the points boost he needs to take second.

Player Comments:
- "Another tight match with Stuart in perfect tennis conditions!" -- Tom
Player Comments:
- "Brian and I played a really tough, competitive match over a pretty gruelling 2 hours. I was very lucky to win the 2 sets as they really could have gone either way. Thanks for such a good match Brian" -- Stuart
Player Comments:
- "I felt more comfortable than Jochen in a new slow re surface court at Tooting. He didn't manage to finish his aggressive passing shots to win games on serve. Very flat aggressive and fun tennis from both sides though. Thanks" -- Andres
Group Summary:
Edward's rise up the ranks continues, as he finishes four wins to the good to take home his second title on the bounce . Paul once again gave Edward a run for his money and Tim joined in on the act too as both of their head to heads went the distance. Tim pips Paul to the runner up spot thanks to his additional bonus points - getting matches set up early really does pay off!

Edward Gould bt Tim Keast (Apr 8) 6-3, 3-6, 6-3Group Summary:
Lots of closely contested matches in a very committed group three. Alex fought his way past the competition to chalk up a magnificent seven wins and with bonus points in the bag too he takes the prize in style. Andrea pushed Alex to the max in their epic head to head but couldn't quite prevail, however this excellent form saw him secure second place with a fantastic five victories. Hats off to Joseph too for getting all his matches in.

Reveal CommentAlex Beaumont bt Andrea Gnoli (Apr 25) 6-2, 2-6, 6-4Player Comments:
- "Epic match! I stormed to a 5-1 lead in the 1st set but, even though I held on to win it, I knew Andrea was coming back strong. Andrea is a very good player and, to be honest, technically much better than me - and he went on to dominate the 2nd set to set up a decider. The 3rd set however was a real battle and great tennis! I fought back again and got back into the rallies. Pretty much every game went to deuce and, with fading light, I didn't think we'd finish in time. We had a really great rally around 2-2 which upped both our games, and made for some good tennis. So many break points for both players. I was serving for the match at 5-4 but was 15-40 down so it really could have gone either way. A very enjoyable game " -- Alex
Player Comments:
- "A very enjoyable match. Patrick a bit rusty at first, but as his shots started flowing it became really close, and we were even-stevens over the last few games. " -- Joseph
Player Comments:
- "Nicky is fantastic at the net and very confident vollying and smashing. I got some good lobs in but this made things tough! A very clever player with good tactics - e.g. bringing me into the net and then hitting a winner - I had to dig deep in the 2nd set at 3-5 down to close it out. Very enjoyable match and a great battle!" -- Alex
Player Comments:
- "Very enjoyable match. Lots of tight games, and Karnan came up with a lot of great shots" -- Joseph
Player Comments:
- "Although this was 6-0, 6-0, Karnan has strong forehand and a big serve in him - as he builds consistency he will be a strong competitor. Perfect weather for it!" -- Alex
Player Comments:
- "Some good, enjoyable, tennis in perfect sunny conditions! The play was less one-sided than the score suggests with some great rallies. I played pretty solidly today so managed to hold out to win, but Carl is a good player with a strong backhand so I needed to be on my game. Good luck with the other matches Carl. " -- Alex
Player Comments:
- "Very enjoyable match. And a very tight, edgy second set with just one service break. " -- Joseph
Player Comments:
- "A enjoyable match closer than the scoreline thanks joesph" -- Carl
Player Comments:
- "I raced into a 5-0 lead in the 1st set but Charlie came back strong and made me work hard to close it out finally at 5-3. The second set was very close and could have gone either way. Lots of breaks of serves, long deuces and momentum swinging back and forth. I won a crucial few points at 4-5 down and then pushed hard to close the match out. Charlie rarely misses a thing and has a powerful shot in him, going for the lines. Fortunately I was able to stay in the rallies but it took a great deal of effort! Well played Charlie." -- Alex
Player Comments:
- "Joseph can count himself unlucky not to have picked up at least a point here, after a very tight second set that could have gone either way. In fact, Joseph had the chance to put away a winner to have taken the set to 5-4 for the chance to serve for the set, at a time he was serving very well - fortunately for me, he hit the ball out and I won the game in deuce. A shame in some ways as a third set would have been very interesting! It got a bit nervy/safe towards the end of the 2nd set but we had some good rallies and Joseph massively stepped up his serve and general play (changing tactics) to make this a great match! " -- Alex
Player Comments:
- "karnan gave me a more difficult match than scoreline tells thanks karnan" -- Carl
Player Comments:
- "A really good game. Nicky had me running all over the court, and the second set was tight right up to the final point" -- Joseph
Group Summary:
John showed no signs of nerves on his debut with five straight victories moving him ahead of the rest into top spot. Matthew played the most matches and he reaped the rewards of this commitment with a well deserved silver. Kudos to Richard for being the only player to give our prize department some work to do with his good scheduling skills.

There were a number of extremely close three setters across the scoreboard and none more so than Brice and Chris' marathon 7-6, 5-7, 7-6 head to head - brilliant effort both! This win for Brice kept his momentum going and he finishes unbeaten with six wins to his name to take the crown. Chris edges ahead of Walter into second, thanks to the extra point he gained from the set won in his match with the champ. Unfortunate to see Robert withdraw - hope you're ok!
