Collapse AllSheffield Singles - Round 40 | Thursday 13 September 2018 to Wednesday 7 November 2018 (Midpoint: Wednesday 10 October 2018)

A fantastic Autumn round in Sheffield where 117 matches were played, equating to more than 80% of those on offer. Thanks for taking part and continuing to make the league a success - it would be great to keep this going into 2019. Well done to everyone who made it past the strong competition to secure a group crown and hope to see you all next time!

Group Summary:

Choosing the 'match of the group' was a difficult decision in this round with many three set thrillers and competitive contests appearing on the scoreboard - well played everyone. Robert Hawksworth and Sofiane once again found themselves battling it out for the gold at the top of group one. It was a case of "third time lucky" for Robert in their "uncomfortably close" head to head and with bonus points to his name too he pulls clear to clinch his maiden title.

Player Comments:

  • "During the first set the strong sideways wind and light rain made the conditions challenging for both players. The match was stopped for 15 minutes due to rain at score 4-1 in second set. Then both players warmed-up for 5 minutes prior to continueing the match straight after the rain stopped. Overall the match was satisfactory"  -- Maksym

Group Summary:

There was very little to choose between the front-runners of group two with only a couple of points the difference between first and fourth spot. Richard finishes with the best stats of the round with six wins from six but on this occasion this wasn't quite enough to claim the group crown. Iain and Callum played every match and bagged their bonus points, and with five victories and points from defeats added to their total too they are left to fight it out for first place. In the end the extra set Iain won in his epic losses proves the difference as he secures an extra point to narrowly claim the prize.

I played so poorly that I dragged Callum down to the depths of my level with a mixture of mis-hits, wind-assisted balls and doinks over the net. Player Comments:

  • "A great match. Arman's measured approach, with occasional delicious cross-court forehand winners, gave him a 5-2 lead in the 1st Set. I managed to force a tie break but Arman was too good. Finally realised Arman is a leftie and got my my own cross court forehand, and down the line backhand, going to take the second set. The 3rd set was an extremely tense affair with both of us checking our shots to stay in points; Arman relying on backspin drop shots and myself on safe trading deep topspin. I was extremely fortunate to win the final tie break. A really enjoyable match against a nice opponent; I am looking forward to our next match!"  -- Iain

Player Comments:

  • "A great match, lasting a combined 3.5 hours over two evenings. Some ridiculously long rallies, a few with 30+ shots. Many games were punctuated by sublime inside-out forehand and down the line backhand winners from Angus and extremely lucky (wind assisted) lobs from myself. I just pinched it by staying in points long enough for a mistake after both of our serves began to come apart in the latter stages. An extremely enjoyable match and I look forward to our next match. Cheers Angus!" Iain

Group Summary:

It was very tight at the top of group two with both Sam and Gill recording a superb six wins to give themselves a chance of the prize. Now Gill takes the bragging rights for finishing the round undefeated and this included an "amazing" three set victory over Sam, but the point Sam earned in this match gave his tally the boost he needed to narrowly move into the lead- well played both. Kudos to Thomas, Olivia and Leo who also played lots of matches and earned their bonus prizes.

Player Comments:

  • "Great opponent & an amazing game! There were no easy points in this match with both of us chasing down every ball. A tight first set ended 6-4 to Sam & he went 3-0 up in the 2nd before I regrouped & clawed back to level. I subsequently managed to win that set 6-4 to take it into a decider. The 3rd set scoreline yo-yoed from 4-2 to me, then 5-4 to Sam before I got it to 6-5 but struggled to close out on my service game. There must have been a dozen or more deuces with neither of us managing to win 2 points in a row! Eventually on my advantage I just got lucky & won it 7-5, but could just as easily gone to a tie break & a win for Sam. Really good match up, thanks Sam & definitely hope to play again. "  -- Gill

Luckily for me I managed to hold on in there in the second set and I’m not sure how I managed to win the set but I feel very lucky to have pushed it to a third set. But the windy conditions affected his game, esp in the first set, & he gifted me a number of free points with double faults. His consistency improved in the second set and we were nip & tuck with many lung busting rallies. Luckily I just managed to break serve once & sneaked the 2nd set 6-4. I felt very fortunate to come away with a win in this one as with his serving on form, I’m sure Tom would beat me convincingly."  -- Gill

Player Comments:

  • "Thank you for the game today Isobel, I know how difficult it was to fit it in with your work. It was a really enjoyable and fun game, just as it should be. Most of the rallies we played were long, you cover the court well and the 2nd set was so close at 2-2 and 5-4, you pushed me all the way. Pleasure to meet you and would be nice to meet up again for a game sometime. "  -- Brian

Player Comments:

  • "A very nice enjoyable early morning game played with long rallies and good sportsmanship. The score line is a bit flattering to say the least and does not reflect how well you played Helen. You have so much energy around the court. That first set was so close at 3-3 with an important 7th game going to many deuces and we both had a problem keeping our serve during that set. The game was fun. Thank you. "  -- Brian

Player Comments:

  • "Nice to meet you Nigel. A very enjoyable game in warm sunshine. You played really well and had meet pinned at the back at times with your forehand shots. That second set was so close at 3-2 and I lost track of how many match points you saved, you made it so difficult to get that last game. The coaching is definitely paying off for you. We'll meet up again for another game mate. "  -- Brian

Reveal CommentBrian Smith bt Olivia Foxton (Oct 7) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Played early on a sunny Sunday morning, this was one of the most enjoyable games of tennis I've played. You played really well Olivia and the score line does not do justice to the quality of tennis that you played. Long rallies, a few going to 25+ shots, volley shootouts at the net, not mention some of your lobs that left me stranded mid court. You had a consistent, mainly to my back hand serve, and kept me pinned to the baseline with those deep return shots. I look forward to meeting up again for a game when I'm sure the shoreline will be a lot closer. "  -- Brian

Player Comments:

  • "Nice to meet you today Suzie. A very enjoyable game. Your serves were consistent and your drop shots seem to have an increased gravitational pull to the ground. The score line is a bit flattering considering the closeness of some of the games. It's not easy moving between squash and tennis but you did well and made a good game of it. Look forward to playing you again sometime. Enjoy the rest of your games. "  -- Brian

Player Comments:

  • "Good match and tighter than the scoreline suggests. First set returns were very much on top as we both struggled behind serve. By the end and through the second set i'd started to serve a little better which made the difference. Lots of tight, duece games which could have gone either way. Unfortunately Nigel pulled up with an injury chasing down one of my mishits at 5-0. Good luck with the rest of your matches Nigel."  -- Steven
