Collapse AllNorwich Parks Singles - Round 22 | Thursday 16 November 2017 to Wednesday 24 January 2018 (Midpoint: Wednesday 20 December 2017)

There were fewer groups this round compared to last time, perhaps because of the winter weather and busy time of year, but those of you who joined were rewarded with lots of close and competitive matches. There were group wins for seasoned players and league debutants alike, and a number of 3 set contests which went to the wire. Over two thirds of all possible matches were played too which is a great effort. We're already looking forward to the next round of Norwich Parks Tennis League, hope you can join us!

Group Summary:

Roles were reversed at the top of Group 1 this time with Tomi seizing the group crown from last round's winner Andrew, although Andrew has the bragging rights from winning their head to head in a close 2 set match. Tomi did well to schedule 5 matches and win 3 of these, and Enol also had a strong round including a win over Tomi.

Congratulations to Richard who improved dramatically on his fifth place finish in the last round to finish top of the group this time, just ahead of Dimitris who also had a great run following promotion from Group 3. Richard managed to edge their head to head, a tight 2 set match in which Dimitris had the misfortune to break a string in the second set, but Dimitris showed his fighting qualities to win an even closer 2 setter against Jesse. Great tennis everyone!

  • "A late night match played in great spirit. The first set was tight with most games going to deuce, but I seemed to manage to close them off with some good serving. . The second was a different story - Jesse took control and I found myself chasing the set. Jesse found some form which made us have some long rallies but Jesse’s consistency and good serving put him in the driving seat. The decider started off close but I seemed to find another gear and managed to get a lead which made it difficult for Jesse to get back into it. . He saved many match points before I served out for the match. Great match - we’ll played! "  -- Chris

Player Comments:

  • "It's always an enjoyable, hard fought contest with Chris as we play very similar styles. Perfect conditions at Waterloo Park helped make this a cracking match with numerous close games and lung-busting rallies. Admittedly helped by the lion's share of fluky net cords, I just managed to win enough of the key points to keep my nose in front. Well played Chris and look forward to playing you again soon!"  -- Patrick

Player Comments:

  • "Sunday morning at Eaton Park is always a nice time and place to play tennis, although this time it wasn't as straight forward. The choice of ends at the start was a challenge; the end with the frost on the court or the end with the blinding sun in your eyes. It was the same for both of us so we proceeded to play through the games with the score going back and forth. I had a bit of luck in the first set with a few net shots and just managed to edge it. Second set, Patrick took the lead and 5-4 up was looking odds on, but the remaining games were tight but went my way. Enjoyable game as always Patrick - cheers for the game. "  -- Richard

Group Summary:

Congratulations to Andrew for rising up the rankings in Group 3 to take the group honours this time, recording 4 wins and finishing 2 points clear of runner up Richard. The group's other 3 set battle was between Andrew and Mark, which was settled on a tiebreak in the third set.

Thank you for the game Mark and welcome to the leagues."  -- Andrew

  • "A really fun game on a sunny (if chilly) Sunday afternoon at Eaton Park. Mark D started the match in good form, taking the first set 6-1 after some doubles-esque serve-and-volley play. The second set was much, much closer with Mark A hitting some incredible backhand passing shots which could only leave Mark D a spectator. A match which very nearly went the distance (but I'm glad it didn't, as it was getting cold!). Great game Mark, hope to play you again soon."  -- Mark
