Revision information
Provide an explanation of the changes you are making. This will help other authors understand your motivations.

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Getting started

New players will need to complete the player questionnaire before they can join a round. Once you’ve signed up, and for returning players you can join any of the upcoming rounds above.

For everything you need to know before you get started see the FAQs and review the Rules and Regulations, which all players agree to adhere to when playing in the leagues.

If there is anything else you need help with get in contact with Nigel, Sally and the team who will be happy to help!

"I thoroughly enjoyed this round, as I have the others. This has been my best year of tennis since school thanks to this league and I've been happy to recommend it to others,"

Mark Waters

"Thanks for the updates, commentaries and scores....a great incentive to get on and play. I was going to wait unitl July to enter but took the plunge after four and a half months off with a back injury so the fitness has gone out the window but I figured, what the heck... make hay while the sun shines besides which I am getting to meet players who enjoy singles!"

Vikki Chubb

"Loved playing again after a break of 20 odd years. This is a great idea and a I can't wait for the league to start again. Really well organised and a joy to be part of. I've been spreading the word so hopefully you'll get a few more people signed up,"

Richard Powell

"Fantastic. I thought I'd hardly play due to the winter weather but managed to get all games in", Richard Powell

Richard Powell

"Love the Local Tennis Leagues! So pleased I entered",

Tessa Killingbeck

"[In my last match] it was nice to see we had both improved from our first match - the benefit of having different people to play and regularly tennis. So thanks for running the league, and for everyone for playing the games,"

Player Comments:

  • "A great match with Paul at Eaton Park today. Ok, the wind was up, but we managed to play some great points in a match which was up and down more than zebedee on a trampoline. Paul was convincingly leading the first set but I managed to fight back at the end to take it. In the second set I was leading 5/2 but Paul managed to up his game and even it up. We went in to a tie break which I was leading 5/2, then Paul won the sportsman award. He hit a volley which I couldn't get close to. I assumed it was in but he declared it out himself. At such a crucial point in proceedings! This is what tennis is about. Suffice to say we both had a great match, and there were two winners. I just about won the tennis match, Paul won he Sportsman award. "  -- Graham

Reveal CommentAndy Turner bt Sam Potts (Jul 17) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This was a really enjoyable game where we both played some good tennis. We matched each other for quickness around the court and the game was closer than the score reflects with a lot of games going to deuce. Sam's game picked up in the 2nd set and he pulled back from 3 love down to 5,4. In the end I managed to hold one before Sam got into his momentum. There were some great rallies aong the way. Great game cheers Sam."  -- Andy
Reveal CommentJonny Bray bt Andrew Ireland (Jul 15) 6-4, 4-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Andy has a good and consistent serve; when he's in the mood he also plays a very nice forehand cross court loop. Where are you Rafael Nadal? The first 2 sets were played in balmy conditions; both of us conceded to having had a few liquid pre-match meals the night before. For me, today was all about getting the ball over the net, something Andy is pretty consistent at. A very low % 1st serve and abysmal return came back to haunt me in the 1st 2 sets, confidence waning as a result and reaffirming the idea that match tennis is often mental, consolidated by errors and the odd late night! These were ironed out in the 3rd set, played a week later + a few extra sets for fun. Cheers Andy, good game. Overall, close contest, good rallies and banter."  -- Jonny
Reveal CommentAndy Turner bt Graham McGrotty (Jul 12) 6-2, 4-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "This was the first game for Graham for a little while and mine since turning my ankle a few weeks ago. The game was very scrappy. Graham did show off his deadly top spin forehand from time to time and was a difficult opponent to play against. With both tried changing our game play to counteract each other. In the end it came down to a bit more consistency on my part...not pretty but enough to win. A very friendly game. "  -- Andy
Paul Martin bt Alan Barnes (Jul 10) 6-3, 6-4
Reveal CommentAndrew Ireland bt Sam Potts (Jun 30) 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A great competitive match. First set could so easily have gone either way with neither player stamping any dominance on the court. The second set scoreline defies the the closeness of the contest as both players battled a hard fought game. Thanks for a great match Sam. Andy"  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentJonny Bray bt Sam Potts (Jun 28) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "It was nice to meet Sam, super friendly guy. We were were greeted by drizzly and humid conditions. In the second set Sam attacked the ball valiantly often smashing it deep and powerfully to the baseline. There was no safe tennis or slicing here, total respect. He deserved more, much more; it was lucky for me that his unrelenting assault led to a few too many unforced errors, surely nothing he won't put right in his next encounter! "  -- Jonny

Most games were close, and on top of our clear match nerves we had the unpredictable wind to contend with. In the end it came down to who rode their luck best. Great game Andrew cheers."  -- Andy
Reveal CommentSam Potts bt Alan Barnes (Jun 23) 6-4, 6-3

  • "Very enjoyable match against Alan, in quite difficult windy conditions. Two fairly close sets, involving plenty of breaks of serve and chasing down drop shots! "  -- Sam
Reveal CommentAndy Turner bt Jonny Bray (Jun 18) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "One hot day for a game of tennis with temperatures at 31C. Jonny had been at the beach most of the day already and I had spent the day trying repair a flat roof. So both of us were well and truly cooked before we started. Each set lasted about an hour with Jonny taking a bit of time to get into his service game which was probably the difference in the first set plus a few too many unforced errors. In the second set Jonny went 3 games up to love, the heat was getting worse and we were both running out of water. I managed to even at 3 all and to take the set 6-4 in the end. It was a very hard fought match with many games in the second set going to long deuce games. Thanks Jonny a pleasure tp play against."  -- Andy
Reveal CommentAndy Turner bt Alan Barnes (Jun 17) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "What a glorious day for tennis albeit quite hot. This game was a bit closer than the score suggests with several games going to deuce. Alan made too many unforced errors which gave me an advantage from the start. On top of that my firsr serves were behaving themselves today. Alan was a friendly opponent and it was a very enjoyable game and atmosphere. "  -- Andy

Player Comments:

  • "A lovely evening for tennis. This was a really good competitive match and the score doesn't really tell the story. Simon has so much potential; he could be a real force on the court - he hits the ball extremely well, but currently lacks consistency - I suspect that this will come with more match time. As it was, my more consistent, if less spectacular, game was enough on this occasion but it will be interesting to see how Simon's game develops. Thanks for the game Simon."  -- Nick

Tadgh brought a few lucky strokes with him into the second set squaring up the match. All to play for in the 3rd the first three games took over a half an hour to complete with one game having more than 12 deuce points. Quite a lot of good rallies and fight to the death points in the last set made for an intriguing finale. "  -- Tadgh

Adam gained the upper hand in the first set as result. In the 2nd set Olive changed tactics to great effect and used a high ball game + coming to the net more restricted Adam to being on the base line. There were some really good rallies and Olive showed good movement around the court to dig deep to keep pushing every game to a tight conclusion. Hold of serve for both players was inconsistent and added to the challenge of the match. Reveal CommentAdam Battley bt Lee Newell (Jun 29) 6-3, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "A very tight match which Lee displayed real control of his slice on a cool over cast evening. A real power full hard hitting match in which both players stood toe to toe. In both sets Adam had to come from behind. Lee covered every square inch of the court with his constant running. a key area of play which determined the key points was the net play. Both player were very clinical and had good success hen they moved to the net. the second set could have gone either way and to be fair was a cruel way to end a very combative match which both player had changed tactics throughout the match to adjust to play. Lee played with a very cool head and was a true gent in the game a real top bloke."  -- Adam
Reveal CommentAdam Battley bt Howard Jones (Jun 28) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "This game was played in the wind swept rain gushing through the park courts. A crisp short rallied match which both players played with smiles on their faces. Throughout the match Howard shoed some real magic of choice shots and loved using hid Del Potro slice to build the game play."  -- Adam
Reveal CommentAdam Battley bt Richard Fowler (Jun 25) 4-6, 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "After a rain blustery start to the game Richard dominated and took advantage of condition and adjusted well. The score of the 2nd set is not a refection of play. Richard made full use of the court and displayed some real magic. The high point of the match was the first 2 game which Richard regrouped and played shot perfect tennis. This match will be remembered as the match which no hold of serve could be made. We were both poor. Adam struggled with an injury which was tried to the limit by the angles Richard layed on early in the third set. It was a good fun match played as these should be played with determination and passion. Richard is a true gent who I have to say I would love to play again."  -- Adam

Reveal CommentAndy Macdonald bt Ryan Newell (Jul 5) 6-1, 4-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "I settled a little more quickly in the 1st set and served fairly consistently whereas Ryan was struggling to find form early on. The next 2 sets were incredibly tight, Ryan became the stronger server in the 2nd and maintained pressure to level it a 1-1. I found myself 4-0 up in the 3rd, only for Ryan to fight back to 4-4 which led to very tentative play for the last couple of games which I thought Ryan's momentum would see him through to the match win. My serve returned and I found some form to narrowly edge it and take the win. Great match and the obligatory rematch looms. Thanks Ryan."  -- Andy

The first set score is deceptive in that many games went to deuce and some of those games went to many deuces including the very first game which was a long one. Owing to my Scottish heritage, I adapted better to the weather conditions than Andrew!"  -- Liz
Reveal CommentAndrew Butcher bt Kalliopi Moysiadi (Jun 25) 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This was the first time Kalliopi (Kelly) had played tennis for a couple of years and her confidence and rustiness were evidence in a very one sided and quick first set. Andrew's tensed up (maybe the thought of a first victory in ages) at the beginning of the second set and Kelly seized a break. This made for a much better second set with some good long rallies and evidence of Kelly's strong backhand and, frustratingly, her use of lobs every time Andrew came to the net. Although both of us lack confidence it was pleasure to play Kelly and a fun, good natured match."  -- Andrew

We managed to take some games but in the end they were to strong and won the first set quite comfortably. As the matched continued it was the battle of the servers between Andy and Antonino and the battle of the anchor players Mary and Jon.
