This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

A five star performance from Andy who finishes the round with a 100% winning record from his five matches to clinch the crown. However in a competitive group such as this, it was no easy ride for Andy with every match proving to be tricky encounter. Reveal CommentAndy Turner bt Ian Mack (May 30) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was the first time I have played at Harford Park and it was also a first for Ian. The road is noisy but the courts are pretty good. It was a very scrappy game today from both players. Andy came back from 3-1 to win the first set 6-3. The scrappy play continued into the second set with Andy's volleying next to poor and Ian having too many double faults. In the end Andy was a little more consistent. It was actually perfect weather for tennis - shame the tennis was far from perfect! Thanks for the game Ian."  -- Andy
Reveal CommentAndy Turner bt Hugh Ferguson (May 24) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "It looked initially has though I may have a reasonable easy ride...but Hugh decided to put a stop to that theory! In the second set the game was much much closer in fact Hugh had sights on making it a comfortable second set for him at 5 - 2 up. I had to dig deep and take a few chances to bring it level at 5 - 5 before taking the second set and the game. The weather was not great with rain pouring down towards the end of the first set. The court had it challenges as well - but it was the same for both players. Hugh moved around the court really well and his defensive play was difficult to play against. It was a thoroughly enjoyable game despite us both looking like drowned rats with some good tennis. Hugh was a very fair player too. Andy"  -- Andy

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentHugh Ferguson bt Ian Mack (May 20) 7-5, 3-6, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Great game. Tough one too. Few dodgy bounces on the court and sun a real problem. Match ebbed back and forth and lucky to nick it in the end. Very few love games and lost count of the number of deuces and break points in most games."  -- Hugh
Reveal CommentPaul Martin bt Hugh Ferguson (May 20) 6-3, 4-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Very enjoyable game. Paul has a very good serve. Eaton courts excellent, weather great (but made for hot work) and a pleasure to play Paul. Not many loves games as I recall but Paul too strong and consistent for me in the end. Cheers and well played."  -- Hugh
Reveal CommentAndy Turner bt Paul Martin (May 19) 6-2, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "Another tough game this one. Was very hot and sunny, a great day for tennis albeit the sun did cause some problems, more so in the second set. The game had all the potential of going to a third set but fortunately the points went my way. Paul does have a very good first and second serve which is the most consistent I have played against. In the second set the tennis was a bit safe at times with some occasional skillfull clashes at the net. All in all the game was a pretty good one and played in good spirits. "  -- Andy
Reveal CommentSteven Middleton bt Ian Mack (May 18) 6-2, 3-6, 7-5

  • "A close match which could have gone either way. Both players still striving for better consistency. However, played in a good spirit. Thank you Ian. "  -- Steven
Reveal CommentAndy Turner bt Steven Middleton (May 14) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "This was a tough game despite the first set score. It was a little windy and that certainly made playing conditions challenging. The second set was certainly very tight with many games going to deuce. Both players were pretty evenly matched and in the end it came down to andy being a little more consistent on the day. Some good tennis all round."  -- Andy

Player Comments:

  • "It was a case of trying to beat the weather as well as your opponent today. The wind was blowing heavy from one end to the other and causing some issues for both players. The 1st set was over with quite quickly but Tadgh had other ideas when it came to the second set. We had some good rallies and several games went to deuce. I managed to just take the second set in the end. Just as we finished the rain started to take hold. Thanks for the game Tadgh."  -- Andy

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentAdam Battley bt Richard Bryant (May 31) 6-3, 3-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This match was played on a glorious sunny afternoon . Both player brought their a game. Having played each other 4 times this year this was their FA cup final. Adam took early control of the first set and which had a wide range of shots. Richard came back well in the 2nd set and played some cleaver drop shots and fine finishing down the line. Both players hit good deep rallies which made for a great battle which both players played with smiles on their faces. Richard struggled with cramp in both legs towards the end of the 2nd set and the game was called off as a result."  -- Adam
Reveal CommentEdgardo Casimiro bt Richard Bryant (May 27) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "The first few games were all on serve, hardly any deuces, then half way through the first set until the end of the match were decent rallies with plenty of winners rather than errors. A really good game where Edgardo deserved the victory and I was pleased with the competition I gave him. "  -- Richard
Reveal CommentAlan Barnes bt Graham Clarke (May 25) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Graham is a much better player, returning to the game, than the score suggests. He had some great accurate shots hitting the lines often. The game was probably decided on who made the fewest errors. Wishing you well in the remaining games."  -- Alan
Reveal CommentAdam Battley bt Robert Preston (May 23) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "It is with great thanks Rob moved the time for this match to make it happen. A lovely warm afternoon with a very deceptive cross court wind which impacted greatly high ball lobs. Rob for a big man showed wonderful movement on the court and really used his top spin to good effect. Every shot was won by Rob at the net with great accuracy. there were a good number of toe to toe rallies which both players enjoyed and this allowed the game to be played at a very quick pace. It took most of the first set for Rob to get his serve firing on all 4 cylinders and when it started rolling it was a beast of a shot coming over the net which Adam had to wrestle with time and again. This was the most creative opponent I have played this year.Well done Rob"  -- Adam
Reveal CommentRobert Preston bt Alan Barnes (May 21) 6-2, 6-1

Richard Bryant bt Alan Barnes (May 17) 6-1, 6-2
Reveal CommentAdam Battley bt Edgardo Casimiro (May 13) 4-6, 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "This was a game started in a rain filled afternoon. It then eased and a good quality match was played . Both played hit sound ground stokes and serve seemed a key element of play. Ed tournament experience showed early on and will be a front runner to win the group as he displayed a great range of game play to comfortably take the first set. A deserved first set lead."  -- Adam
Reveal CommentAdam Battley bt Osa Odeh (May 6) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This match was completed on the warmest day of the year. In the cool surrounds of Eaton park in the afternoon. Osa showed a great range of style on court and really grew into the match. It showed he was rusty and did not show his true colours until the 2nd set when everything clicked and some long fast rallies flowed between both players. Once Osa grasped his cross court fore hand he was deadly and finishing was a wonder to watch. The difference that turned the match seemed to be the battle of the back hand shots which consistency seemed to be on Adam's side. Overall a really nice game completed in great spirit and played with a top gent who will give other players in our league a top afternoons entertainment."  -- Adam
Edgardo Casimiro bt Graham Clarke (Apr 28) 6-1, 6-0

Unfortunately Graham suffered from a shoulder injury which impacted his service games. A great gent and I wish him well in the rest of the league. "  -- Adam

I managed to race to a 4-0 lead as I coped better with the slippery conditions than Howard. As it was impossible to change direction and Howard was starting to come back into the match, I decided to play the rest of the match bare foot! Howard eventually did the same. Player Comments:

  • "Gruelling match on a hot day - good job we started early. For me it was 'groundstroke day' all over again: I couldn't play a decent groundstroke for the life of me. So the match was Liz's decent tennis against my spoiling sliced safety shots dropped really short. It was almost the only shot I could manage on the day. Even when I came in to the net Liz played a succession of magnificent passing shots and awkward lobs. I had to ignore my sense of shame at playing such ugly tennis and be glad it was just enough to grind out the result. Many thanks Liz. Sorry again for the earlier 'no-show'."  -- Harry

Player Comments:

  • "This was the longest and most gruelling match I’ve ever played in this league! Matches against Linda are always close and this was no exception. She had two match points in the second set but I managed to steal the points and set back. We played a championship tiebreak for the 3rd set as it was so hot and we’d been playing so long. Couldn’t work out how to record this on the website though"  -- Liz
Reveal CommentHarry Seddon bt Linda May (Apr 21) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "This was an enjoyable, close game on a warm bright day. We were probably both guilty of playing rather too many short, 'cagy' shots and the momentum alternated several times throughout. I edged the first set but Linda cleverly adapted her tactics and shot selection as the match progressed (I'm not saying how!) to lead 4-1 in the second. Once again, though, the momentum shifted and I scraped through in just over the two hours. Thanks Linda."  -- Harry

We started strongly and took the first set to 3 with dominating net play from Dawn, though trying to play volleys while lying under the net turned out to be a less successful approach... The second looked similar as we charged into a 4-1 lead, but Liliya and Linda had other ideas and came storming back to 4 all with some strong and constitent ground strokes. Reveal CommentMary Gillings & Andy Turner bt Jordan Scrimshaw & Thomas Horan (May 13) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "The score does not reflect how close the game could have been. To be fair Jordan and Thomas never got the run of the game and one too many double faults made it equally difficult. Jordan''s first serve did cause problems when in but this was not often enough to have an impact. Mary played solid from the byline allowing Andy to pick up any loose shots at the net. Quite a few games went to deuce but the run of the game was with us today which helped keep Jordan and Thomas under pressure. On top of all that there was an annoying child playing tennis on the other court being being loud which was quite offputting at times. Jordan and Thomas apparently were on the booze the night before which I am sure helped us too. Thanks for the game guys."  -- Andy
