This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Player Comments:

  • "This turned into an epic battle. Matt started by double faulting more often than he first served but made up for it with great returning as most of my service games went to deuce. While Matt got very little reward in the first set he eventually ran away with the second. The 3rd was tight with some fabulous rallies from us both but when I finally held serve for a 5-4 lead I knew I had to strike. I managed to shake off my tentative returns and went for a few shots forcing enough mistakes from Matt. He's only going to get better though so I look forward to the next tussle. "  -- Doug

Reveal CommentDoug Brown bt Andrea Hermann (Jul 12) 7-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "So playing a match after a long day at work with no tea and after an hour and a half of social tennis was probably not the smartest move for either of us! We struggled through an error ridden first set, which I managed to edge 7-4 in the tie break. The 2nd was better from us both but I think I got a 2nd wind and Andi maybe not so much! Though I think double faulting because you get a whiff of yourself as you toss the ball up has to be up there with my best excuses! I blame modern synthetic materials! Good fun match again, thanks. Reveal CommentMatt MacDonald bt Aryan Baghbadrani (Aug 8) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "This was me playing for a possible group win so I was going to use all of my old silver fox cunning to bag it. As I said to Aryan after the match, I spotted his forehand looked deadly but his back hand was weak and so I just mercilessly played to it all match. I think the wind also caused Aryan some trouble on his serve and this gave me plenty of double fault free points. Apart from the wee bit of wind it was a pleasant sunny evening on the Meadows."  -- Matt
Reveal CommentColin Gill bt Neil Watts (Aug 5) 6-2, 4-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Great match played in good spirits on a very warm Sunday afternoon. Quite a few long deuce games that could have gone either way and a third set I don’t think either of us particularly wanted. Thank you for not judging me when I had to lie down half way through the 3rd set and I look forward to us playing again. "  -- Colin
Reveal CommentAryan Baghbadrani bt Chris Rourke (Aug 4) 4-6, 7-5, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Highly contested and enjoyable match with great conditions. First set was back and forth with lots of breaks but Chris did well to hold serve and take and he also took an early lead in the second. I somehow managed to take the second by winning back to back games. Lots of long rallies and deuce games that fortunately went my way in a tiring 3rd set. Thanks Chris!"  -- Aryan
Reveal CommentMatt MacDonald bt Chris Rourke (Jul 29) 6-4, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "We were lucky with the weather as it stayed dry no matter how dire the forecast had been. So pretty perfect conditions for a hard fought match with many games going to deuce . Chris started well and took a 2-0 lead in the first set, and I'm not sure how I managed to claw that back and take the set. We were just neck and neck in the second but I got a break to go 5-4 on my serve but couldn't get over the line and we headed into a tie break. Tie breaks are weird things and it could have gone either way but luck was on my side and I managed to get to six points before Chris and was relieved when my last serve didn't come back at me. I think I would have been done for if it had slipped into a third set. Good run around, cheers Chris."  -- Matt
Reveal CommentMatt MacDonald bt Neil Watts (Jul 24) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Neil has some brain cells left so he could remember that we'd played in the league before. I looked it up in the archive and it was group 4 round 29 way back in 9/11/14 and I won 6-0, 6-3! So strangely similar result. I know Neil's game anyway from the club social so I was expecting it to be a hard fought match and it was mostly, but Neil gave me some relief with some double faults and his ball just going long more times than mine. However, I'm pretty sure I did more of the running around and sweating. I also appeared to have nature on my side with a pigeon giving it laldy just as Neil was about to hit the ball and the sun bursting out just at the right point on his serve! Otherwise perfect conditions for an enjoyable game of tennis "  -- Matt
Rokas Stonys bt Colin Gill (Jul 22) 6-3, 2-6, 6-0
Liam Cassidy bt Chris Rourke (Jul 22) 7-6, 6-2
Reveal CommentMatt MacDonald bt Liam Cassidy (Jul 20) 6-2, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "A damp start but it dried out quite nicely as per the weather forecast. Can't really remember the first set and a wee bit surprised at what looks like a comfortable score-line: that's not what it felt like. In the second it was a whole lot tighter but I had managed to get to 5:4 and was serving for the match. We then entered some sort of time warp whare I had some huge number of match points but eventually collapsed and we moved another couple of game to the tie-break. Liam took an early 3-1 lead and then I had a vision of sitting down with a nice cool beer and I didn't want to slog through a third set to get there! Enjoyable match that could have gone the other way - cheers Liam"  -- Matt

Player Comments:

  • "Cracking match of tennis in hot conditions, thoroughly enjoyed, thanks Colin!"  -- Aryan
Reveal CommentMatt MacDonald bt Rokas Stonys (Jul 15) 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Not sure if it was just me with the timing out on hitting the ball or the way that Rokas was putting it back to me, but the first set was just a blizzard of my bad hits and Rokas took it easily. I was up 4-1 in the second and then it all went pear-shaped again and Rokas pulled it back and I was lucky to get it to a tie break. Just in the last game or so in the second set my serve finally made its appearance and this gave me the edge to secure the tie-break. The light was beginning to fade a bit in the third as were the energy levels both sides of the net and it was just a case of who made the fewer mistakes. A very enjoyable match with a good bit of running around. "  -- Matt

Reveal CommentMark Delos Reyes bt Dan Robertson (Aug 5) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Match played on a windy Sunday morning with both players constantly having to adjust. It has been tough to gain any rhythm at all but both players fought through it. I thought of shortening the points as I found it difficult to play the baseline with the wind but Dan burned me multiple times with his deep-angled passing shots every time I go to the net! Lots of deuce games which could have easily gone either way. Fortunate to come out with a win. Really enjoyed the match, thanks Dan!"  -- Mark

Reveal CommentMichael Grieve bt Dan Robertson (Jul 24) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Good match played in ideal evening conditions. Dan won more points at the net but I countered this with several lobs. In the second set every game seemed close, neither player held serve easily. "  -- Michael
Reveal CommentBire Dhir bt Lindsay Maclean (Jul 23) 7-5, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "This was a great match. I started off well and took a quick lead in the first set by moving Biren around the court. But he made a great comeback, capitalising on some errors by me and took the first set. Biren then had the momentum and his confidence built and was hitting some great attacking shots. I managed a few good lobs to hold him back for a bit, but it wasn't enough and Biren stormed the second set. "  -- Lindsay
Reveal CommentKeith Martin bt Lindsay Maclean (Jul 22) 6-4, 4-6, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Another really enjoyable game with lots of deuce points which could have gone either way. Both of us took a while to get to grips with the wind affecting our serves and groundstrokes but once it got warmer and things settled we soon found our rythm. As before it was a really great match with long rallies and lots of running across the court. The final set, despite what the score suggests, was a lot closer. "  -- Keith
Reveal CommentMichael Grieve bt Bire Dhir (Jul 22) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Both players were evenly matched in most aspects. Biren overhit a number of forehands from good positions which might have changed the outcome had they gone in. Enjoyable match, look forward to playing again."  -- Michael
Reveal CommentMark Delos Reyes bt Lindsay Maclean (Jul 15) 6-2, 7-6 (8-6)

Player Comments:

  • "Cracking match played on windy conditions as we needed to constantly adjust depending on which side of the court we are playing. Tight match all through out, with just a few points separating us, and could have easily been the other way around. Lindsay gifted me with her first double fault of the match in the 2nd Set Tiebreak, which ended up being a critical point to win the 2nd Set - fortunate to end it there I don't think I could hang on for a 3rd Set. Enjoyed that match, thanks Lindsay!"  -- Mark
Reveal CommentMark Delos Reyes bt Bire Dhir (Jul 9) 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "All through out an intense match with both of us not giving any easy points against each other. The 1st set was extremely competitive but Biren's solid work from the baseline proves too good as he took the 1st set. The intensity carried over to the next two sets as the score continued to be very tight. Midway through the 3rd set, things took an unfortunate event when Biren tweaked his ankle. But incredibly, Biren just walked it off to play an even better tennis. A couple of lucky shots towards the end were the only ones that separated us as I finally took the 3rd set. Thanks for the match! "  -- Mark

  • "Very competitive match which could have gone either way -- I am lucky to get the first set which eventually became an important factor. The hot playing conditions added another level of challenge for both of us as the match went on. Towards the 3rd set, we were both crawling to finish our match as it became a battle of who could stay longer on the court. Fortunately I was able to hold on to win the 3rd set. That was a real enjoyable match! Thanks Keith :))"  -- Mark

Mark then saved 3 more matchpoints at 5-4 down with great serving. Eventually a tiebreak was required and I managed to convert the sixth matchpoint. "  -- Michael
