And so we have arrived... it's 2012, and the year that promises so much sporting excitement has begun the way it means to go on. Well done everyone for battling through Christmas, slippy courts and the occasional gale-force wind to bring Round 14 to a close!

Thank you all for supporting the league. We are, as ever, very grateful for the hard work you put in scheduling your matches and for your efforts on court. And perhaps we don't thank you enough... With your help we are beginning make real progress on our mission to make friendly, competitive tennis available on local courts nationwide. Thanks in no small way to the inspiration of our Wimbledon players, we now have over fifty leagues up and down the country and many more planned for 2012.

The next round starts on Monday February 6 and runs until April 1.

Many thanks to all those who have already joined, and if you haven’t, but would like to, the deadline is Friday February 3. As usual, players who have done well will be promoted (usually the winner of a group, but often the runner up too when it has been close).

And now, on to the groups...

GROUP ONE
Winner: Zeff Turner

Making his Wimbledon debut, Zeff produced a dominating display in the top group, winning all four of his matches, three of them in straight sets. It is a great start, and marks him out now as the player to beat in Wimbledon. David finished second after a couple of excellent three-set wins, while a late burst from Olivier launched him into third place. Some really competitive matches in this group, and it will be interesting to see if Zeff can keep this momentum going in the next round.

GROUP TWO
Winner: Debbie Palmer
A fairly quiet group with only the five matches completed. Debbie won two of them and picked up some crucial bonus points to take top spot, including an impressive victory over Kieran. Maxime made a late challenge having earlier beaten the leader, but his final-day win over Huw wasn't enough to overhaul the lead. He wrote in afterwards:

"Interesting to hit with Huw - we had a nice game. My first and second serve was the real weapon today!"

Hopefully the next round will be a bit busier, but congratulations to Debbie on the win!

GROUP THREE
Winner: Richard Marrison
This was an amazing group in which everyone picked up at least 5 points, and at least one victory each. Richard takes it with a dominating display - he beat all five of his opponents, though he had to work particularly hard in three-setters against Andrew and Ian. He reported on the latter:

"A close, long match in damp conditions, really enjoyable, Ian is a clever player with a sometimes unreturnable first serve. The score could have been totally different with numerous games going to deuce."

Ian turned out to be the closest challenger, as he won his other three matches in some style. Alex finished in third place, helped by a wonderful three-set win over Rhys at the end of the round:

"A very tight match that lasted almost 2 hours, many long tense rallies and usually as soon as one of us would break the other would break back straight away."

Judging by the results, this was one of the most evenly matched groups we've had, with so many three-setters and tie-breaks, and every single player having a solid round. That makes Richard's record all the more impressive, and he can look forward to a higher group next time.

GROUP FOUR
Winner: Russell Jacobs
With just a week to go, it looked like Anton was going to take this group, but Russell edged their match and pips him at the top by the smallest of margins. Russell wrote in afterwards:

"A great match, especially in the second set until Anton was hampered by cramp towards the end."

Both players had fine rounds throughout, each picking up three wins. Robert and Giles recorded a victory each, and were not far behind the top two. Commiserations to Anton for coming so close, but Russell just proved too good in the crucial match.

GROUP FIVE
Winner: Rob Young
A great battle at the top of group five, with three players separated by a single point. Rob takes the group after winning all five of his matches, including what turned out to be a crucial victory over Douglas - it's the only way to separate the two players at the end of the round. It's hard luck for Douglas, who had an excellent round himself, typified by an exciting three-set win over Michal, who finished third with four wins from six. There were solid rounds throughout the group, with Jo and Jacqui notching a couple of wins each, but the star of the show was Rob who proved unbeatable.

GROUP SIX
Winner: Michele Panattoni
Michele takes group six by a single point from Francesc, and it proved to be a dramatic end to the group. Francesc won against the leader, but it went to three sets, and this extra point turned out to be vital for Michele. Elsewhere, there was a good win for Ben against Sean (in three sets), while Kate beat Ben in two hard-fought sets. Sean finished his round strongly with a couple of wins, but it is Michele who takes the spoils in his first ever round in Wimbledon!

The winners will be receiving their £20 prizes and certificates and we do hope to welcome you all back next time.

You earn one point for every set you win and two bonus points if you complete 3 matches by the mid way point.
