With even the pros taking an extended break it is time to put the latest round of the St Albans Tennis League to bed. It has been the kind of round that we really hope will become the foundation for an expanding league next year. It was really great to see so many people playing.
Thank you all for supporting the league. We are very grateful for the hard work you put in scheduling your matches and for your efforts on court.
The next round starts on Monday December 3 and runs until Sunday February 3.
Many thanks to all those who have already joined, and if you haven’t, but would like to, the deadline is Friday November 30. As usual, players who have done well will be promoted (usually the winner of a group, but often the runner up too when it has been close).

Winner: Kirstie Caneparo
Kirstie marked her St Albans debut with a superb display, in which she won all three of her matches. She came from behind to beat Ned in three sets in the pick of them, and took the group by 3 points. Andy finished second after a win over Jim, and he also managed a set in a tight battle with Paul, who ended up in third place. A quiet-ish group, but take nothing away from Kirstie who has announced herself as a real force in the league.
Winner: Alun Davies
Alun will be joining the group one action next time, after coming through group two unbeaten. He won three matches, and though he finished level with Matt on 8 points, his win in their encounter proved decisive. Matt can be pleased with his round too, coming through gruelling marathons with both Charles and Ed, and Matt wrote in after the latter:
"We played the match over two consecutive Fridays on the fast astroturf courts at Townsend. On the first Friday is was raining throughout the first set, heavy at times which made conditions tricky. Eventually, we abandoned because the rain was too heavy. On 12th Oct we resumed the match with a very bright and low sun and blustery winds. Despite the challenges there were spells of good play and some great rallies. An enjoyable but challenging match overall."
Ed was just a point off the top two in an epic battle at the top, while Hilary's win over Stephen put her equal fourth on points:
"After a delayed start due to rain then hailstones (in addition to the gale force winds and arctic temperatures) we eventually managed to start the match! The match was closer than the score suggests, with a lot of close games and long rallies."
Bish's two good wins were an indication of what might have been and in a really competitive group Artur also notched up a win, but it's Alun who takes the plaudits at the top.
Winner: Antony Parselle
Antony was impressive throughout the round in group three, four straight wins giving him a comfortable lead at the top. He capped it off with victory over Artur:
"Much closer game than the score suggests."
Michael and Josephine were tied for the runner-up spot with two wins each, while Matt moved into fourth with victory over Claire. Congrats to Antony on a fine display, and he has good momentum for the next round.
The winners will be receiving their £20 prizes and certificates, and we do hope to welcome you all back next time.
