This is how it works

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Players are grouped by ability, so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA
  • For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three tie break sets; if a set reaches 6 games all, it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are grouped according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Everyone in the group plays each other once during the round
  • You get one point for each set you win
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of each group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winners get a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of the groups (and sometimes the top two) are promoted for the next round; those who come bottom (and sometimes the bottom two) are demoted

"That was the best match I've ever been involved in. Thanks so much for running a great league. I'm loving it!"

Graham McGrotty

"I thoroughly enjoyed this round, as I have the others. This has been my best year of tennis since school thanks to this league and I've been happy to recommend it to others,"

Mark Waters

"The leagues seem to work very well and without exception all the players have been great to meet",

John Kingsmill

"Thanks for the updates, commentaries and scores....a great incentive to get on and play. I was going to wait unitl July to enter but took the plunge after four and a half months off with a back injury so the fitness has gone out the window but I figured, what the heck... make hay while the sun shines besides which I am getting to meet players who enjoy singles!"

Vikki Chubb

"[In my last match] it was nice to see we had both improved from our first match - the benefit of having different people to play and regularly tennis. So thanks for running the league, and for everyone for playing the games,"

Stuart Laws

"Thanks for your organisation. I’ve really enjoyed the 2 leagues this year,"

Norwich - Stephen Alger

"Love the Local Tennis Leagues! So pleased I entered",

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Played over two hot, sunny days, at Waterloo Park and Eaton Park, the first set was closely fought but finally went to Tim in a tiebreaker. The second set, at Eaton Park, wasn't pretty tennis, with both players struggling to avoid unforced errors. Ultimately Tim was slightly more consistent so took the set 6-4. " -- Tim
Reveal CommentTim Rayner bt David Keely (Aug 8) 7-5, 4-6, 7-6

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "This enjoyable, close-fought match was played over two evenings about a month apart. In the final set we decided not to play a tie-breaker (in true tournament style), and Tim finally triumphed 9-7 after some long and nail-biting rallies. Unfortunately the system doesn't allow us to enter the 9-7 result! " -- Tim

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Wonderful courts behind the Norwich Cathedral- definitely one of the best ambience I have played tennis in. David is a lovely and easy going chap and a pleasure to play tennis with. The score does not reflect the match difficulty. His elbow was out of action so I kept entertaining myself trying to score as many of return winners as possible during his serve. I lost two of my service games thanks to some bullet returns. Undoubtedly a serious potential for group 1-2. Thank you" -- Josip

The first set was very close with both players not giving much away but Tim managed to take it 7 : 5.
The second set was close but Chris took control and made it 1 each.

  • "A grueling, competitive match played on indoor courts at Easton college due to really poor weather. Both sets had some great points, with aces, drop shots, winning volleys, lobs and great passing shots. A match that had it all.
