This is how it works

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Players are grouped by ability, so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA
  • For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three tie break sets; if a set reaches 6 games all, it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are grouped according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Everyone in the group plays each other once during the round
  • You get one point for each set you win
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of each group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winners get a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of the groups (and sometimes the top two) are promoted for the next round; those who come bottom (and sometimes the bottom two) are demoted

Vikki Chubb

"[In my last match] it was nice to see we had both improved from our first match - the benefit of having different people to play and regularly tennis. So thanks for running the league, and for everyone for playing the games,"

Stuart Laws

"Thanks for your organisation. I’ve really enjoyed the 2 leagues this year,"

Norwich - Stephen Alger

"Love the Local Tennis Leagues! So pleased I entered",

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Very happy to be able to play a match indoors after all the recent wind and rain. The scoreline was harsh on Victoria who served consistently well throughout. Many of the games went to deuce. Fortunately for Matt, he found his rhythm on his serve early on and had a few lucky breaks when needed to triumph on the day. " -- Matthew
Reveal CommentMark Dumpleton bt Matthew Smith (Jan 25) 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Quite possibly the single best (and longest!) match I've ever played on a very windy day at UEA Sportspark. In a 2 and a half hour epic, great shots were played by both as well as some lucky shots helped by the wind! After letting a 4-2 lead drop in the first set, Mark's serve consistency picked up to help him out of some tricky spots in the second and did just enough to win him the tie break. The third set was remarkably close, with Mark breaking at 4-4 to then go on and win the match on a lob! " -- Mark
Reveal CommentLiz Somerville bt Victoria Chubb (Jan 24) 6-1, 6-3

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Thoroughly enjoyable match helped with the glorious sunshine and warm weather!" -- Liz
Reveal CommentTessa Killingbeck bt Victoria Chubb (Jan 19) 6-2, 6-3

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Tight match in a frosty Waterloo Park." -- Tessa
Reveal CommentJoel Murphy bt Victoria Chubb (Jan 10) 7-5, 6-1

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "A resplendent winter's day greeted Joel and Victoria at Eaton Park for this afternoon's match. The low sun did hammer both initially but soon cleared. Joel got off to a good start pulling out a 4-1 lead, probably helped by playing a practice match the previous day, before Victoria battled back to tie the match at 5-5 with some great long competitive games. Joel then managed to take the next two games and the set as his serve improved. The second set, again, included some great tight games. However, Joel continued to serve well and took the second set 6-1. A really enjoyable game." -- Joel
Reveal CommentMark Dumpleton bt Victoria Chubb (Dec 29) 6-0, 6-0

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "A closer game than the scoreline suggests on a perfect day for tennis at Sprowston Rec! The scoreline definitely flatters Mark, with some great rallies and some lucky points won by Mark at the right moments in the match! We played a 'power set' afterwards and called it a day at 3-3. Really good fun; looking forward to our next match!" -- Mark
Reveal CommentMark Dumpleton bt Tessa Killingbeck (Dec 23) 7-6 (7-5), 6-1

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "A great game played on a beautiful day at Waterloo Park. The low sun meant we needed sunglasses though! The first set was an incredibly close affair, with Mark just edging the tie break to take the set. The second set was closer than the score suggests, with some fantastic lobs by Tessa curbing Mark's attacking net play! Despite interruptions from some children playing football on the next court (!) Mark held out to take the match." -- Mark
Reveal CommentMark Dumpleton bt Joel Murphy (Dec 23) 6-0, 6-3

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "A fun game, Mark's second of the day, at Eaton Park. Mark raced ahead courtesy of being warmed up from his match earlier in the day to take the first set. The second was more closely contested, with a break of serve at 3-3 being enough to see the match to its conclusion. We had just enough time to play a 'power set' for fun, which Mark took 4-3 on a tiebreak. A good afternoon's tennis!" -- Mark
Reveal CommentMatthew Smith bt Tessa Killingbeck (Dec 22) 6-2, 6-1

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Windy but not wet Waterloo was the back drop for this epic two set battle. The score line flatters Matt as many of the games went to Deuce. Tess as always a tenacious opponent, struggled to contain Matt's serve which was sliding off a slightly greasy surface. A change of tactics at the start of the first provided some respite, but ultimately Matt was grateful to secure two points against a tough opponent in tricky conditions. " -- Matthew
Reveal CommentTessa Killingbeck bt Joel Murphy (Dec 21) 6-3, 6-1

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Tricky and tight game in whirling wind and low, blinding sun. " -- Tessa
Reveal CommentMatthew Smith bt Liz Somerville (Dec 20) 6-1, 6-3

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Again almost perfect conditions for Tennis, a slight breeze the only minor inconvenience. I was lucky to catch Liz the morning after the night before! A few close line calls and lucky net cords helped Matt take the first set 6-1. A score that was quite flattering as most games were deuce games in that set.
With both players struggling to hold serve in the second one hold was all it took for Matt to break Liz's resistance and finish 6-3. Really enjoyable game on a lovely morning. " -- Matthew
Reveal CommentMark Dumpleton bt Liz Somerville (Dec 19) 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-3

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "A great game on a windy day at Sprowston Rec. Despite feeling under the weather Mark was able to keep hanging on in the first set to take it to a tie-break, which Liz convincingly won with a combination of good net play and powerful backhand shots. Mark switched tactics in the second set which luckily paid off, and held on to take the match in the third. A fantastic, close game with some brilliant points played!" -- Mark
Reveal CommentTessa Killingbeck bt Liz Somerville (Dec 14) 6-2, 6-4

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Nailbiting stuff in a chilly, but rainless, Waterloo Park." -- Tessa
Reveal CommentMatthew Smith bt Joel Murphy (Dec 13) 6-0, 6-2

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "A perfect Sunday morning for tennis. Real stroke of luck with no wind or rain. Matt came out of the blocks firing and took the first set to love thanks to consisent serving and a couple of lucky breaks with nett cords hit on crucial points. Joel upped his game in the second set and serve improved massively combining with some really good net play to avoid the double bagel, clawing 2 games back from 5-0. Just as Joel was really getting into his stride disastser struck; 3 double faults in the same service game handed Matt the set and match just as momentum looked like it was swinging the other way. " -- Matthew
Reveal CommentLiz Somerville bt Joel Murphy (Dec 5) 6-1, 7-6 (7-5)

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "An enjoyable game with the added bonus of the energising music from cardio tennis on the next court. However, we were both challenged by the high wind!" -- Liz
