Round 9 - round over
Monday 3rd May to Sunday 27 June 2010
Mid way point for bonus points and a free can of balls: Sunday 30 May, 2010
Eighty matches were played in this spring/early summer round - a great achievement so give yourselves a pat on the back. The Meadows Tennis League is helping to lead the way in a grass roots (well concrete roots at any rate) movement to establish friendly, competitive singles tennis in public parks up and down the land.
Britain is very lucky to have some wonderful public parks and sometimes you can hardly imagine a better place to play a game of tennis. It was great to be able to visit in person last month and see the Meadows Tennis Club's contribution to the Edinburgh Festival of Sport. It was a reminder for us of how special this city-centre location is. We really hope you have enjoyed your matches and will join up again for the tenth round!
GROUP ONE
Winner: Will Baron
GROUP TWO
Winner: Marcin Kaminski
Success in the Meadows Tennis League is in part about organisation and determination. Of course it helps if you can play a bit (as he clearly can!) but you have to impressed by Marcin's sheer consistency: all matches played, not a set lost, and bonus points duly obtained. A truly impressive round. Brandon has the consolation of a very good runner's up position while other players have been philosphical: "Good league so far despite most of my results!", reported league stalwart, David.
GROUP THREE
Winner: Daniel Batey
We like it when players earn their bonus points - it means the group has got off to a flying start and hopefully some fun tennis is being played. In Group Three five players collected bonus points which actually makes Daniel's achievement all the more impressive. With six wins out of seven matches, even though he didn't get bonus points, he was able to equal Sean's impressive tally of points. And as Daniel beat Sean, it means he claims the group. Well played!
This was was a great round with some notable matches. And if the group winner doesn't mind, we'll single out one - Daniel's only defeat, his match with Alan. " I had a terrific match with Daniel Batey today", says Alan "and managed to stop his fine winning run with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win in a hot and humid day. The last set was on a knife edge, with 4 match points and at least one break point in the final game. I benefited from my “prize lesson” with Andrew Haw 2 days before the game – I should have taken it sooner!"
GROUP FOUR
Winner: Hayley Bennett
When Darren beat Hayley in the third set tie-break back in May, Hayley could have been forgiven for thinking this wasn't going to be her round. But Hayley stuck to her task, and although she won only two of her five matches, it is she who tops the group and she must really be congratulated for her determination. Helen, one of the players to beat Hayley reported: "A very close and exciting game, where she came from behind, but I managed to clinch it after a tie break. After the game Hayley and I had a muck around, and I am just glad she wasn't hitting like that during our match!". It all goes to show, even losing performances can be the building blocks to ultimate victory.
