GROUP ONE
Winner: Martyn Johnstone
Right up to the end this could have been either Martyn or Frank’s group, but looking back it was their own match that proved crucial. “The match lasted 2 1/2 hours and felt longer,” Martyn emailed. “One game lasted 20 minutes alone. I need my sleep now.” Ruefully, Frank noted it ended his ten match winning streak. But it was three fantastic sets that sums up what can be so great about this friendly, competitive league. Well done to allthe players in this group, and massive congratulations to Martyn, a very worthy winner.
GROUP TWO
Winner: Javier Ruiz
Who needs bonus points when you can win your matches in straight sets? Mind you, with a tiebreak going to 10-8, Neil did his best to puncture Javier’s aura of invincibility. In the end though, a terrific performance by Javier takes him to the top of the Group 2 table – well done!
GROUP THREE
Winner: Will Arbuckle
Will battled it out to keep on top of his group, surviving two three-setters on his way. His encounter with Paul was typical of his fighting spirit: “A tough but good match! I managed to make a come-back from 1-4 down in the final set!” With some really accomplished tennis, not to mention some classy opposition to overcome, Will is a very well deserved winner!
GROUP FOUR
Winner: Alan Seywright
Neil and Alan made it as difficult as they could to decide a winner in this group – they tied on points. But as Alan beat Neil, the honours quite justifiably go to him. Alan, who didn’t lose a set played exceptionally throughout theround and is sure to progress up the groups if he keeps playing. Well done!
