The Kingsway Tennis League: Singles Round 10
The round runs from Monday 27th June to Sunday 21st August 2011
It has been a great round, with some very close matches - countless tie-breaks and three-setters to keep things exciting!
Thank you all for supporting the league. We are as ever very grateful for the hard work you put in scheduling your matches and for your efforts on court.
GROUP ONE
Winner: Roy Gascoine
In keeping with the general theme of a very close league, group one was decided by the minutest details. Defending champion Roy and many times group one winner Dylan finished tied on 10 points, but by virtue of his win in their encounter, Roy takes the group and retains his crown in the process. He is a worthy winner, taking all 4 matches without dropping a set, though Dylan pushed him all the way and showed great character in his matches, particularly against Lee (winning 7-6 in the third set). Daniel finishes third after some great wins over Dylan and a three-setter against Martin, while Marcos and Leigh had their own epic match, finishing 6-4 to Marcos in the deciding set. A really good group with lots of matches played, well done to Dylan for a stern challenge at the top and to Roy on a great title defence. Sadly this will be his last appearance in the Kingsway league as he is heading back to Australia. But great to go out on a high, thanks for being such a great competitor and all the best down under.
GROUP TWO
Winner: Kether Clouder
Kether proved unstoppable in group two, incredibly completing all 7 of his matches and winning every single one. The last few nearly tripped him up though, a tight 7-6, 7-5 win over Matt being followed by a comeback against George from a set down. Kether wrote to us about his match with Matt:
"This one was a bit of a battle with a hangover, but prevailed in the end, really close match."
Matt takes the runner-up spot after 4 wins, while Michael and George also had solid rounds. Another really active group, and Kether's blistering finish to the group gave him a healthy cushion at the top, congrats!
GROUP THREE
Winner: Dan Armitage
A thrilling group finally comes to a conclusion, and it provided the breathless finish it always promised to! Dan and Aleksandar both finished on 12 points, each man boasting unbeaten records. Turning to the rule book, (as they didn't meet themselves) the first thing to deduct is bonus points. So Dan wins. It is a great shame is that the top 2 never got to play each other. However, this was the only thing this group was lacking. At one point, 5 players were tied at the top, and it looked like nothing would ever separate them.Dan even asked if we could decide the group on alphabetical order! Iain and Richard had great rounds with 4 wins each, while Jon and Tim picked up a good few victories along the way as well. As the group went on, Dan slowly began to draw away from the rest with fantastic three-set wins over Jonathan and Iain (of which Dan said he was "knackered after a 3 hour slog"). This gave him a nice lead, but Aleksandar made a late charge with wins over Iain and Richard (on the last day of the round). It wasn't quite enough, and Dan takes the group! Well done to all on a wonderful round, everyone played at least 5 matches; Jon, Jonathan and Ian managed to finish all of their matches, a great effort.
GROUP FOUR
Winner: Thomas Weisenburger
Another close battle at the top of group four, which Thomas takes after winning all 7 of his matches. He needed three sets to get past nearest challenger David, who finished just a point behind after 5 wins. Alan (6 wins) and Simon (3) also had very good rounds, and they had the pick of the matches against each other - Alan just winning 6-7, 7-5, 7-5. A big thank you once again for your scheduling efforts, 3 players completed their rounds and everyone managed at least 4 matches. Well done to Thomas on a great round.
GROUP FIVE
Winner: Tye Mason
After coming through gruelling three-setters with Oliver and Cecilia, Tye is a worthy winner in group 5 with 10 points. Cecilia and Den battled for second place with 2 wins each, while Matt won his only match of the round. Den wrote to us after her win over James in a close match:
"I played James and won 7-6, 6-4, it was a great match. Nearly every game went to deuce, and he is a very good player."
Though not as busy as some of the other groups, there were a good few three-setters played and some tight scorelines. Tye takes the plaudits after a flawless round, how will he fare next time?
