It has been a busy round, with an impressive 66% of all possible matches played, and some very close groups to keep things exciting!

Thank you all for supporting the league. We are, as ever, very grateful for the hard work you put in scheduling your matches and for your efforts on court.
The next round starts soon on Monday November 14 and runs until January 22.
Many thanks to all those who have already joined, and if you haven’t, but would like to, the deadline is Friday November 11. As usual players who have done well will be promoted (usually the winner of a group, butoften the runner up too when it has been close).

And now, on to the groups...

GROUP ONE
Winner: Martin Barr
In a very tight group, Martin comes out on top by a single point, having won 3 of his 4 matches. He recorded some excellent wins, including a hard-fought match with Kether and a wonderful three-setter against Matt, which ended on a tie-break. Guy was the only player to finish with a 100% record, and he was just a point behind Martin by the round's end. After picking up three-set victories over both Martin and Matt, he was just unable to play a potentially crucial fourth match. Incredibly, half of all the matches in the group went to a deciding set, and one of these was between Matt and Kether, Matt prevailing in the end. Overall, not the busiest group, but plenty of excitement, and Martin is a worthy winner.
GROUP TWO
Winner: Thomas Weisenburger
Thomas had a fantastic round, winning all 5 of his completed matches, to take group two by a couple of points. These included tight three-setters with Guy and runner-up Marcos, while he also had an unfinished match with George which was locked at one set all. Marcos picked up four wins of his own, notably coming from a set down to beat Aleksandar, while George was the only other unbeaten player in the group with 4 wins. Another highly competitive group, and again there were a significant proportion of three-set matches, but congratulations to Thomas on a near flawless round - how will he fare in group one next time?
GROUP THREE
Winner: Alan McLeod
After losing his opening match, Alan recovered in style to win his next four and take group three. He had to work particularly hard against Richard and Iain, both times winning the deciding third set 6-4. The man who beat Alan finished in second place, Jon's blistering start to the group halted slightly by a defeat to Richard, who himself finished in third. He wrote in after a win over Iain:
"I beat Iain 7-5, 6-2. A fantastic first set which lasted over an hour."
One of the signs of an evenly matched group is one where no player remains unbeaten, and that was the case here. Some great matches, and Alan did well to come out on top.

GROUP FOUR

Winner: Kieran Fuller

Real drama in group four, with an ever-changing leaderboard throughout, and some late results changing everything at the death. Kieran emerges as group winner with 5 wins out of 6, and he wrote in after the match with James:

"A strong start to the match, despite a wobble and going break points behind in the 3rd game, I took a 5-0 lead and James was serving to avoid the dreaded bagel. Good tennis from James saved a few set points and then rattled off three games in a row before I closed out the set 6-3. The second set followed a similar pattern to the first, I took a 3-0 lead before James dug in and took it to 4-3, but after a couple of inspirational (in my opinion!) winners from my end, I held serve to win the set and match. It was an entertaining match and on another day it could have been a different result completely. Very enjoyable match against a talented opponent."

Dan was just a point behind after 4 wins of his own, while James was a further couple back. Kieran is very deserving of the win, particularly as he beat both of his closest rivals in the round. The group as a whole was fantastic - all but one match was completed, and every single player picked up at least two wins.

GROUP FIVE

Winner: Matt Davis

In fitting with the rest of the league, group five provided a dramatic race at the top. Matt and Andre went toe-to-toe throughout, and in the end Matt took the group by a single point. Each player won 6 matches, but the crucial point came when they played each other. Andre wrote in:

"Great game against Matt which lasted over 3 and a half hours spread over 2 days. I can't remember a game that was not deuce and very hard fought on both sides. In the end either of us would have been worthy winners. 6-4, 6-7, 7-6."

Such a great match was a fitting way to decide the group, but what proved decisive was the fact that Matt completed his round. Andre did not manage to get his 7th match played, and so Matt takes the group. Elsewhere, Mary finished in third after three-set wins over Richard and James, who picked up a couple of wins as well.
