Round 26 was a great one! Two hundred and sixteen matches were played, and in some groups every possible match, or very nearly every possible match was played. There were a few withdrawals, mainly due to injury and a couple of people couldn't get on court, but out of 118 starters, that is not bad at all. Many people played 5, 6 or 7 matches - a great testament to everyone's scheduling skills and the effort you all put into the organisation - so a heart felt thank you! It is what makes the league work, and we're very grateful.

The next round starts soon on Monday November 7 2011 and runs until January 8 2012.

Many thanks to all those who have already joined, and if you haven’t, but would like to, the deadline is Thursday November 3. As usual players who have done well will be promoted (usually the winner of a group, but often the runner up too when it has been close).

GROUP ONE

Winner: Darren Turpin

Darren marks his return to the Highbury Fields league with victory in group one, as he prevailed in all four of his matches. He didn't drop a set throughout, and is a worthy winner. Peter and defending champion Simon had a great battle for second place, eventually decided by their last match of the round - Peter coming from a set behind to win. Simon picked up a couple of wins of his own, while Paloma beat Angelo in two close sets. There were a hefty number of unfinished matches in the group, giving it an untidy look, but that takes nothing away from Darren's win!

GROUP TWO

Winner: Michael Cutbill

Michael takes the group by a whisker, as one of three players locked on 8 points. He finishes top due to his wins over the other two challengers, Ludovic and Phillip, but he left it late to seal it! He beat Phillip in the last match of the round, and it was a classic:

"6-7, 6-3, 7-6 - another very lengthy game in the style of my match with Gary. Each set took nearly an hour and lung-bursting rallies (for me anyway) of 20+ strokes were not uncommon. Phillip and I both suffer from far greater competence in defence than attack!"

Phillip also wrote in after this, congratulating Michael on "his incredible powers of resistance and consistency". Ludovic had a fine round, picking up three wins without dropping a set, but again his defeat to Michael proved pivotal. Elsewhere, Simon recorded two excellent victories, but was unable to play any further games and will feel he could have challenged at the top. Some wonderful matches in this one, with plenty of three-setter and tie-breaks, but well done again to Michael who can now look forward to life in group one.

GROUP THREE

Winner: Daryn Swainson

When Daryn joined the league last year he said he was rusty, and we put him in group 16. Silly us! He was not there for long, and has been powering his way up the league every since. This time, recovering from an opening match loss to David, and in some style - he won his next five matches to take the group by a point. His match with Alex effectively decided the group, and fittingly it was an epic, which Daryn won in three sets. He was also pushed all the way by Hubert, and three-set matches really characterised this group. Alex came back from a set down to beat David, while Hubert did the same against Richard. In addition, no player remained unbeaten, which is always an indicator of a competitive group. Not surprisingly, this made for a very close finish, with just four points separating the top four. Well done to Daryn for holding firm though, and he is thoroughly deserving of his win. Group two beckons!

GROUP FOUR

Winner: Nick Swaby

A quiet group in comparison to most of the others, with only seven matches completed. With three players locked on four points, there could have been some confusion as to the group winner, but Nick put paid to that by recording wins over the other two players at the top. It's a shame more matches weren't played, as there were some really competitive matches - Nilakshi won a tie-break in a hard-fought win over Seb, while Keith won his only match of the round in two close sets.

GROUP FIVE

Winner: Alun Davies

Alun reigned supreme in group five, recording five wins without losing a set. There was a scare in the sixth match though, as he was locked at one set all with Nick before they had to suspend play. Nick finished in second place after some good wins, while Adam ended the group strongly to take third place - he beat Graham in the last match of the round, a thrilling three-setter. Plenty of three-set matches throughout the group, Diana winning a couple against Graham and Lembe, while Lembe recovered from a set down to beat Adam.

However, Alun was the star of the show, but we must now say goodbye to him:

"Gutted I am having to leave this league. I am hoping the league in St Albans is this much fun!"

GROUP SIX

Winner: Michael Boehm

Michael never really gave the others a chance in group six, winning his five matches in double quick time. He finishes on 12 points after not dropping a set, and can look forward to the next round in a higher group. Elsewhere, Oliver racked up a couple of wins to finish second, while Jane wrote in after beating Anna:

"Anna and I played today and I managed to win 6-2, 7-5. The second set was a strongly contested one with Anna having at least one set point before I managed to win. A great way to start a Sunday!"

GROUP SEVEN

Winner: Andy Macleod

A tight round ends with a one point gap at the top, Andy taking the group from Ben by virtue of an extra win. He won four of his five matches, including a wonderful three-set match with Robert. Ben will feel frustrated at not having played another match, particularly as he beat Andy in their encounter:

"7-5, 6-2, it was a good match and even closer than the score indicates."

Jonathan really derailed Ben's chances by winning their encounter, another great three-setter. There was excellent competition throughout, Tim beating Richard in a deciding set which went to a tie-break. As with group three, no player finished with a 100% record, which is always an encouraging sign that the group is evenly matched. Well done to Andy, he and Ben can look back with satisfaction at some fine rounds.

GROUP EIGHT

Winner: James Johnson

A four way tie at the top of group eight, and it proved a real headache to separate them! James and Alastair both enjoyed wins over Hector and Nigel, so it became a two-horse race. However, both of the top two had identical records of three wins out of three, and they didn't manage to play each other. Therefore, it comes down to games conceded - Alastair lost 17 games, but James lost just 12 and so he is crowned the winner. It's never ideal to decide groups like this, but that takes nothing away from James who had an excellent round. There were some really good matches throughout the group, with Alastair beating Hector in two tight sets, and Nigel enjoying a hard-fought win over Adam. A really close group, and hopefully the controversial finish encourages you all to come back next time!

GROUP NINE

Winner: Fiona Dias

Fiona put in a great effort to take group nine, winning three of her matches and picking up a set against Gary. She wrote in after beating Allan:

"We played in the summer in Hackney so knew the other's style, plenty of very long rallies (last time passers by started watching our long rallies and one of them made my year by asking if I was a coach!). Very close first set with us exchanging breaks early on and me being 5-3 up, but Allan fought back to 5-5. It was a shame for him that an uncharacteristic unforced error at break point saw him lose his serve and the set 7-5. That might have got him down a bit, I went 4-0 up in the second set and although he did break back once, I managed to come through with the win."

Masashi will feel hard done by after winning all four of his matches, including a win over Fiona, but was just unable to play a crucial extra match. Gary finished in third, while Allan had a fine round - winning three-setters against Paul, Nick and Fatemeh! Some excellent matches in the group, and congratulations again to Fiona.

GROUP TEN

Winner: Roger Serrabassa Vilar

Roger proved too strong for group ten, winning all of his completed matches and leading by a set against Chris in their unfinished encounter. Roger wrote in after this match:

"Very tricky match against Chris, he has the same level as me and we enjoyed a really good match with long rallies. My legs are still shaking. Even though he lost the first set on a tie-break, he never gives up, and in 2hr 15mins we still didn't have enough time to finish the match."

Alice sealed second place with a couple of good wins, while Chris won his three other matches to take third spot.

GROUP ELEVEN

Winner: Henry Mance

Henry's excellent round earns him a deserved group win, as he triumphed in all five of his matches. Though fairly comfortable in four of those matches, he was given a real test by Malcolm:

"I somehow edged it 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. Over three hours of cat and mouse, the last part in a near gale. Some of the rallies were so long that I'm surprised one of us didn't faint. Very good fun!"

Despite such a strong round, Henry only won the group by a point, thanks largely to the battling qualities of Mariano and Malcolm. These two had a great match, which Mariano reported on:

"Malcolm and I tried our hardest to finish but even three hours on court just couldn't do it. Score remains at 7-6, 2-6, 5-4. Malcolm held serve to kick off the final set, then we traded breaks on the next two games, then each held all the way to 3-3. I broke and held to go to 5-3 - at this point, we had about 3 minutes left on court, with the next occupants breathing down our necks. We still managed to squeeze in another game, Malcolm holding to make it 5-4. Maybe another time."

Thankfully, this didn't prove crucial in the outcome of the group, as Henry's wins over both players would still have meant he won the group. Great excitement in this one!

GROUP TWELVE

Winner: Helen McNulty

The tight groups just keep on coming! Another tie in this one, with Helen and Brett locked on 14 points, and identical records of 5 wins from 6. Luckily, they did play each other, and Helen's win in a three-set classic gives her the overall group win. This added to some fine victories throughout, though she did lose right at the end in another three-setter to third-placed Danielle. Brett can look back with satisfaction on his round, and he wrote in after beating Michael:

"A good game mid-morning with Michael, he was 4-0 up in the second set but I found my rhythm to pull back. This is such a close group. I really like having 8 people in the group, it gives us a chance to play more games."

Danielle had the same win-loss record as Helen and Brett, and had she recorded an extra point it would have given us a real problem in clarifying the group winner! Alan, Julian and Michael picked up multiples wins, and impressively every player completed at least four matches.

GROUP THIRTEEN

Winner: Poonam Lloyd Williams

"One of the great things about this league is the international mix," writes Sally, "and playing Ksenia gave me the chance to see what I could remember of my extremely rusty Russian. Alas that amounted to about three words, but I did learn a new one (probke, or traffic jam!). Ksenia has a lovely style, but it was great to see her rustiness wear off as she kept playing - by the time we completed a month-delayed match, she had improved a lot, took a set off me, and went on to win her first match the following day on the penultimate day of the round. But I am getting side tracked. Poonam was the star of our group, winning 6 out of 7 of her matches in great style. It is even more impressive as she has not been playing long. Neil's rock-steady consistency secured him second place and he didn't even need his bonus points - a great feat in a group where 89% of all possible matches were played. But very well done, Poonam, a very worthy winner."

GROUP FOURTEEN

Winner: Richard Coy

A late surge from Richard proved crucial, as three wins in the last couple of weeks was enough to secure first place! All of his wins were in three-set battles, beating Eddie and Gillian, as well as coming from a set down to prevail against Katie. Bill finished second, while Raymond and Jim had fine rounds, picking up three wins each. Raymond was also kind enough to say:

"I would just like to thank you for organising the Highbury Fields Tennis Leagues, which I have thoroughly enjoyed and met the most delightful people"

GROUP FIFTEEN

Winner: Rebecca Law

A couple of early wins put Rebecca on her way to victory in group fifteen, and crucial sets earned against Gary and Angus confirmed it. Olly came second with three wins from three, and he wrote in after beating Catherine:

"There were a lot of deuce games, especially in the second set, and it was a good match."

Gary won both of his matches, including a hard-fought win over Anouch:

"After a strong start from Anouch, the first set went to a tie-breaker - lasting exactly an hour, the second set settled a little quicker at 6-3. A good competitive run-out on a sunny autumn day."

Well done again to Rebecca, who will be heading for promotion.

GROUP SIXTEEN

Winner: Katie Russell

One final bit of confusion to clear up in this round! Katie, Lynnette and Rob all tied on 6 points each. Having tried to use the head-to-head record with little success (Katie beat Lynnette, Lynnette beat Rob, Rob led Kate), it has to come down to sets conceded. Lynnette dropped seven, Rob three and Katie just two, which gives her the overall win. Just as in most groups, there were a great amount of three-setters in this one - Katie came from a set down to beat Charlotta, while Lynnette attained all three of her wins through a deciding set. She wrote in after beating Rob:

"Rob and I finished a 2 hour match this afternoon. Utterly exhausted but had a great time, made all the more challenging by the gales of wind around Parliament Hill Fields."

Elsewhere, David won his only match of the round against Charlotta:

"Great match with Charlotta, hard fought 6-3, 6-3 with plenty of games going to deuce. We had time left on the court so played an extra set for fun and I count myself lucky to have won the first two as Charlotta really got into her stride and won it 7-5."

A great group to end the round on, and the drama and closeness really summed up the league as a whole. Well done Katie!
