And so we have arrived.. it's 2012, and the year that promises so much sporting excitement has begun the way it means to go on. Well done everyone for battling through Christmas, slippy courts and the occasional gale-force wind to bring Round 27 to a close!

Thank you all for supporting the league. We are, as ever, very grateful for the hard work you put in scheduling your matches and for your efforts on court. And perhaps we don't thank you enough... The Highbury league is the backbone of the Local Tennis Leagues project. With your help we are beginning make real progress on our mission to make friendly, competitive tennis available on local courts nationwide. We now have over fifty leagues up and down the country and many more planned for 2012. But none are yet the size of this, the original league - it's you who provide the momentum and inspiration we rely on.

The next round starts on Monday January 30 and runs until March 25.

Many thanks to all those who have already joined, and if you haven’t, but would like to, the deadline is Tuesday January 24.

And now, on to the groups...

GROUP ONE

Winner: Kenny Tolani

On his Highbury debut, Kenny picks up the victory in the top group, and has immediately made himself the man to beat after winning all 5 of his matches in the round. It's a great start, and richly deserved after some tough wins over Daryn and Michael. Daryn was not far behind in second after being involved in some thrilling three-setters, firstly being on the losing side in a deciding set tie-break to Michael, and then recovering from a set deficit to edge past David. Harry picked up two late wins but was just unable to mount a further challenge, while Michael was just a point back from him. Some great matches in this group, and it's always nice to have a newcomer make such an impression! Can Kenny keep it going in the next round?

GROUP TWO

Winner: Paloma Lopez

Paloma will be joining the drama in group one next time, as she takes this group by couple of points. She picked up excellent three-set wins over Nik (from a set down) and James, and was all set for a 100% round until her last game on the round's deadline day - she narrowly lost to Nick in another exciting three-setter. The group was quite tightly bunched up, with just a point separating the next four players, with Pip taking the runner-up spot. Incredibly, half of the group's 10 matches went to a deciding set, with Pip and Nik locked at 5-4 in the final set, and Nik edging past James in "a very enjoyable match".

GROUP THREE

Winner: Michael Boehm

Michael didn't put a foot wrong in group three, and takes it with a 100% record from four matches. He did so without dropping a set, though he was pushed hard by Adam:

"It was a very good match and it's nice to see myself improving."

Hector finished level on points with the group winner, and impressively was the only player to complete his round. However, he finishes runner-up by virtue of his head-to-head with Michael, who shaded two close sets in the round's opener. Hector beat Isabelle in his final match, and reported afterwards:

"A lot more difficult than the score suggests, with a lot of deuces, but I felt relaxed and found the corners."

Adam and Hubert had productive rounds, picking up five victories between them, the pick being Hubert coming from a set down to win against Ben. Another really close group, and well done to everyone for making it so active.

GROUP FOUR

Winner: Lembe Ngassam

This was one of the quieter groups, and Lembe took full advantage to record a couple of early wins. She was also locked in a three-set battle with Graham which remained unfinished, but these extra points proved useful, and she takes the group by a healthy three points. Oliver and Graham threatened at times, but this group was hit hard by the two early withdrawals, and hopefully next time it will be a lot busier.

GROUP FIVE

Winner: Adrian Bowers

Adrian and Tim are locked on identical records of 3 wins and 6 points, and unfortunately did not get to play each other during the round. Therefore, the decision comes down to sets conceded. Adrian won all of his matches in straight sets, while Tim was taken to three by Andrew, which means Adrian takes the group! However, both players can look back on their rounds with satisfaction. Elsewhere, Andrew picked up a win over Georgina to take third place, while Andy wrote in after beating Tim Human:

"A bit of a 'ding-dong' battle. Tim saved two set points in the first set at 5-3 before pulling back to 5-5 but I pulled through to win 7-5. In the second set I went 2-0 up, Tim then roared to a 4-2 lead before I won the last four games."

GROUP SIX

Winner: Roger Serrabassa Vilar

It's now three group wins (and fourteen matches) in a row for Roger, and he is really shooting up the Highbury leaderboard. He won 5 out of 5 this time, and did so without dropping a set. However, Henry pushed him all the way, racking up five victories of his own, and finishing level on points. It all came down to their encounter, and Henry was brutally honest in his assessment afterwards:

"I got rightly thumped."

These two were four points clear of the chasing pack, which included Richard with four wins, and Nigel with three. There were some excellent matches in the group, with Nigel winning a couple of three-setters against Graham and Marcia, while Fiona beat Graham in three after losing the opener. Well done to Henry on a superb round, but the star of the show was once again Roger. Can he extend his winning streak in an even higher group?

GROUP SEVEN

Winner: Allan Bairstow

Allan takes top spot in group seven with a blistering display throughout. He won all 6 of his matches, though he saved the best till last:

" My match against Tamara was the toughest of the round and even the first set was a struggle. I went 2-0 down in the second and had to suddenly rouse myself - Tamara starting winning her service games to love and kept appearing at the net, where she was ruthless; punching some fine volleys. I was forced to play low percentage passing shots and that was my only way through in the end."

Adam put in quite a shift to take second place, winning gruelling three-setters against Tamara and Susannah, and he reported on the latter:

"An epic 2 1/2 hour match played in great spirit in ice, rain, and at times, blinding sunshine. There could be no consideration of stopping given that Allan and Tamara were slugging it out on the next court. In the end it clearly could have gone either way."

Nick had a really good round in third place, while Helen and Jens notched a couple of victories each. A frantic group, and some really competitive matches from top to bottom.

GROUP EIGHT

Winner: Ricky Feigin

Ricky pips Poonam by a couple of points to take group eight, and he did so by winning some tough marathon matches against her and Neil, a match which Ricky reported on:

"Tonight's match with Neil down at the ITC went in swings and roundabouts. I took the first set comfortably then he nabbed the second even more easily. After being down 4-2 in the final I managed to claw my way back to just take the match."

Poonam was the only player to complete her round, managing to fit in 7 matches over the holiday period - a terrific effort. She won a tight match against third placed Neil, and then an amazing three-setter with Joanne on NYE:

"Oh my what a game, 2hrs 40mins of swaying fortunes. Joanne dominated the second set 4-0 before I pulled her back, only then to lose it 6-4. I went ahead 5-0 in the third set with victory surely in hand, only for Joanne to start playing with forceful aggression, hitting winners from everywhere. 5-5 went to 6-6, and I squeaked out victory in the tie-break at 10-8 thanks to a lucky net cord early on. She played the better tennis for most of the match, and I was lucky to scrape a win."

This was a particularly evenly-matched group, with just a point each separating second to fifth. Interestingly, the only player to beat Ricky was Simon, who was the only player to remain unbeaten. Had he been able to add to his two matches, he could well have challenged at the top. Nevertheless, Ricky deserves the plaudits for a fine display throughout.

GROUP NINE

Winner: Antonin Chef

Another tie at the top of a group, and this time it's three players locked on the same number of points! Antonin, John and Tom all finish with 3 wins and 6 points, but as Antonin beat Tom in their encounter ("heavy rain and wind but great game") it is down to just him and John for top spot. Once again, it comes down to sets conceded as they did not play each other, and John was taken to three by Iroise. Antonin, however, won all of his in straight sets, and so he takes the group. An exciting end to a group which had it's fair share of drama, with three-setters and plenty of tie-breaks throughout. Well done to Antonin on a really strong round.

GROUP TEN

Winner: Anton Short

If Gavin had played and won one more match, this could have been his group - but he would have had to battle for it. His match with our eventual winner Anton, played as the round closed, went to three tough sets. Gavin prevailed but crucially, by picking up a point for the set won off Gavin, Anton stayed ahead of his rival on points. But arguably, another three-setter, Anton's match against Rebecca, was just as important....

Anton ends the group level on points with Rebecca. Had she won that nail-biting encounter she would have won the group. Anton described the match:

"Two similar styles of play lead to a fast paced game where the scores we're always tight. I puled away at the end but to be fair if luck had gone the other way I would have lost it. Really fun match!" Anton

Well done to Rebecca, Gavin and Samantha for making this exciting group so close but it's Anton who carries of the spoils!

GROUP ELEVEN

Winner: Ksenia Karpman

Ksenia proved unbeatable in group eleven, winning all four of her matches to top the group. She was really tested by Samantha and Annette (the latter in three sets), and it was Annette who finished as runner-up, just a point behind. There were wins too for Monika, Katie and Samantha, and it appears to have been a really evenly-matched group. Congratulations to Ksenia on a fine round.

GROUP TWELVE

Winner: Caroline Gargaro

Caroline dominated the group, victorious in all five matches and taking the group title by 6 points. Her storming start seemed to overwhelm the rest of the group, though Thomas, Juliet and Rob did fight back with a couple of wins each. Rob, in fact, also remained unbeaten, and it would have been interesting to see how he would have fared against Caroline. This takes nothing away from the winner though, and Caroline deservedly takes the spoils!

The winners will be receiving their bottles of champagne and certificates

You earn one point for every set you win and two bonus points if you complete 3 matches by the mid way point.
