Mixed Doubles Round Eight
Monday 13 June to Sunday 21 August 2011

It has been a great round, with some very close matches - countless tie-breaks and three-setters to keep things exciting!

Thank you all for supporting the league. We are as ever very grateful for the hard work you put in scheduling your matches and for your efforts on court.

GROUP ONE
Winners: Rita Kilemade & Mark Twigg
A really good battle at the top of group one, with Rita & Mark just pipping three other pairs after winning all 4 completed matches (although they trailed by a set to Jane & Harry in an unfinished match!) There were some good wins for Tamara & Daniel and Adeline & Jack, while defending champions Katharina & Gareth put up a spirited campaign to retain their titles, winning in three sets against both Esmelda & Hubert and Marianne & Robbie. Rain put paid to their late-scheduled matches, so they couldn't mount a last minute challenge but good competition and a busy round made for an exciting finish, well done to Rita & Mark

GROUP TWO
Winners: To be decided
Diana & Steven are tied in every way with Lucy & Darren - same amount of wins, points, sets conceded and they haven't been able to play each other. As no one else can win the group, we are going to make an exception and let them play the decider in the next week or two. We will keep you posted!    Rachel & Nik, Gemma & Marcus and Siobhan & Dominic all tie for third place after winning a match each, but the final act of this drama is still to come!

GROUP THREE
Winners: Louise Argyle & Keiran Jones
A good competitive group, but Louise & Keiran proved too strong and won all 4 of their matches. This included two hard-fought sets against Liz & Ahmad, and a great three-setter against Alison & Patrick. There were great matches throughout the group; Liz & Ahmad reported on their win over Annette & Jeremy:
"We won 6-3, 7-6 in a really good and enjoyable match which could have gone either way. We feel lucky to have won."

 

Meanwhile, Annette & Jeremy had a win of their own to write in about, against Alison & Patrick:

 

"We won 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. A fun game with lots of deuces and good rallies, a bit of rain, some Rolos, and one fall-over trying to reach a drop-shot."

 

Well done again to Louise & Keiran, hopefully we will see everyone again in the next round!


GROUP FOUR
Winners: Sarah & Geoffrey Mulligan
Just the five matches completed in this group, but no shortage of excitement, and it sends up to the rule book to decide this one. Sarah & Geoffrey and Lynda & James are each tied on 2 wins and 6 points, but as the former beat the latter,  they take the group. Annabel & Robert won the other match in the group, against the eventual champions, but this time around group four belongs to the Mulligans.

GROUP FIVE
Winners: Louise Cameron & Alastair Glover
A thrilling group in which 9 three-set matches were played, and fittingly the battle at the top was every bit as close! Louise & Alastair take the spoils after winning all 5 of their matches, coming from a set down to beat Roxane & Guy and Sacha & Tian (9-7 in the third set!). This was Alastair's report on that match:
"An epic match. Battling hard against deteriorating conditions the match ebbed and flowed with the lead changing hands on several occasions during a tight first set. Eventually, Sacha's dominance at the net proved the difference as our opponents took the opening set. After a deluge, we resumed at Highbury with the sun beating down, and we took the second set. Tight games in the third as both teams showed nerves, Tian & Sacha took a 4-2 lead but somehow we managed to sneak it back to 5-4. From here on we traded games until 8-7 and then managed to win the final game to complete a lucky escape!"
Closely following the winning pair were Roxane & Guy and Fiona & Marco, who each recorded 11 points. They had a great match too, which Fiona reported on:
"Marco and I won this evening against Roxane and Guy 6-2, 7-6. Despite our great start the second set seemed to be running away from us with G&R 5-1 up and serving. We fought back and had the chance to serve at 6-5 but it went to a tie-break. I wasn't confident but Marco had done his homework watching Johnny Mac videos on Youtube and some inspired play from him saw us take it 7-0. As Roxane pointed out afterwards why is it our group has played so many matches compared to others, I think we deserve an award for that!"
Your reward is the exciting group you all had, and the longer write-up you get compared to other groups! One last match to touch on, an exciting battle between Elizabeth & Richard and Jo & Michael, which Richard wrote about:
"Happy to report we won a match, had to dig deep but pulled through in the end, a tough but enjoyable game: 6-7, 6-3, 6-0."
GROUP SIX
Winners: Sally Kinnes & Nigel Billen
Sadly runners up Maria and Marcal will not be putting in another appearance in the league as they are heading back to their native Barcelona. It's great pity as we could have looked forward to some great matches from them if their encounter with Sally & Nigel was anything to go by. Sally says:
"By then of this match I was thinking of inventing an unofficial prize for the best-retrieval-of-balls-that-were-supposed-to-be-winners.  Marcal, a former roller hockey player, was simply unbelievable at getting balls back, scooting from corner to corner whenever we thought a point was over. I served for the match at 5-1 in the second set, lost the game, and he and Maria came storming back to take us to a tie break. We held on, just, but I am not sure how. A lovely game against a delightful couple on a beautiful evening."
Unfortunately, this was a rather injury-plagued group, with two couples having to withdraw, but this time it is Sally & Nigel who win.

GROUP SEVEN
Winners: Cecilia Darker & Saurabh Rao
A couple of early withdrawals seemed to somewhat stall the momentum of this group, and only 7 matches were completed. However, Cecilia & Saurabh are worthy victors after winning 4 of them, all without dropping a set. Shirry & Tom and Camilla & Alex picked up wins to stay in touching distance, but this round belongs to Cecilia & Saurabh. Well done!
