It's over at last! Well it does seem quite a long time since the start of the round in the balmy days of September. But we have used the time well and a lot of tennis has been played. Most of the groups have been close and there have certainly been some surprises along the way.

Thank you all for supporting the league. We are, as ever, very grateful for the hard work you put in scheduling your matches and for your efforts on court.

The next round starts on Monday February 6 and runs until April 15.

Many thanks to all those who have already joined, and if you haven’t, but would like to, the deadline is Friday February 3. As usual, players who have done well will be promoted (usually the winners of a group, but often the runner up too when it has been close).

And now, on to the groups...

GROUP ONE
Winner: Adeline & Jack Chapman
Brother and sister Adeline & Jack held their nerve to take the group one title, though they finished level on points with Kalsang & Darren. In the end, the Chapmans' win in their encounter - a classic three-setter - proved crucial, and that is what the separates the pairs at the finish. Adeline & Jack also enjoyed an impressive win over defending champions Rita & Mark, who finished in third place having recorded two wins of their own. There were some excellent three-setters throughout, notable among them was Diana & Steven winning a gruelling match with Katharina & Gareth. Congratulations to Adeline & Jack for a great round, they are the new pair to beat in Highbury!

GROUP TWO
Winner: Liz & Ahmad Zahedieh
In a very active group, Liz & Ahmad came out on top with 3 wins from 5 completed matches. They won a three-setter with Austra & James, and won vital sets in defeats to Annette & Marc and Marianne & Robbie. Incredibly, there were three pairs with unbeaten records of three wins from three, but none of them were able to play a couple of extra, potentially crucial matches. Esmelda & Hubert sealed the runners-up spot with three impressive victories in straight sets, and claimed a couple of bonus points. Annette & Marc and Marianne & Robbie followed closely, while Austra & James won probably the match of the round:

"We beat Susannah & Richard 7-6, 3-6, 7-6. A very close match, could have gone either way."

Plenty of three-setters and tie-breaks in this group, and with so many strong pairs, it is a really impressive achievement by Liz & Ahmad to be in top spot by the end of the round.

GROUP THREE
Winner: Naureen Bhatti & Adam Timmis
Naureen & Adam showed great fighting spirit in winning group three, as they had to win thrilling deciding sets against three different opponents! They recovered from a set down to prevail against Sarah & Geoffrey, and had to win a final set tie-break against Louise & Alastair. The one blot on their record was a defeat to Marnie & Mark, who were the only unbeaten pair in the group. They were just pipped to second place by Sarah & Geoffrey, and the four of them were involved in a great battle that remained unfinished, 2-2 in the final set. Another busy group, with an impressive amount of matches played. Well done Naureen & Adam!

GROUP FOUR
Winner: Sally Kinnes & Nigel Billen
While Sally and Nigel ended up three points clear of runners up Fiona and Marco it could have been a very different result if the match the two couples played had been completed. Had Fiona and Marco won that encounter (and earlier picked up bonus points) it would have been their group. As it is though, Sally and Nigel enjoy a rare win on the league they run! Nigel commented:

"We did well to steal the second set in our match with Fiona and Marco who were playing with real skill. It was a case of trying to be patient and hanging on. Goodness knows what would have happened in the third set if we had got to play it!"

Elsewhere in the group there were very competitive performances from Jill & Jens who beat the winners in three sets and from Judy & Ricky who right at the end of the round, "snuck in our final match this evening with Mark and Jane - the first set especially was a close fought battle with many a cross-court rally". But in the end it is Nigel and Sally who at last get to open the Champagne!

GROUP FIVE
Winner: Rachel Plieger & John Napier
Rachel & John were dominant in group five, winning all of their matches, though they were made to work extremely hard by Juliet & Matt. The top pair recovered from losing the first set to take the match in three, and preserved their 100% record. Victoria & Christian took the runner-up spot after winning against Holly & Andy, and also were locked at one set all with Juliet & Matt. It seems that Rachel & John's blistering form overwhelmed the group slightly, and no other pair was really able to mount a challenge. Congratulations to them, and it will be intriguing to see how they fare in a higher group next time!

The pairs will be receiving their Champagne and certificates and we do hope to welcome you all back next time.
