Haringey: Singles Round 9

The Haringey Tennis League: Singles Round 9
The round runs from Monday 27th June to Sunday 21st August 2011

It has been a great round, with some very close matches - countless tie-breaks and three-setters to keep things exciting!
Thank you all for supporting the league. We are as ever very grateful for the hard work you put in scheduling your matches and for your efforts on court.

GROUP ONE
Winner: Edgar Austrie
Despite being a fairly quiet round in group one, some of the matches that were played served up some great excitement. 3 of the 8 matches went to a deciding set and only 2 points separated 3 players at the top of the table. In the end, defending champion Edgar makes it 2 in a row, after winning all of his matches without dropping a set. He was followed closely by Georgios and Xenofon, who had an excellent three-setter against each other. In fact, Xenofon was involved in all of the group's three-set matches, beating Spyridoula and losing to Stevan, who wrote to us about that match:
"I managed to shake off Xenofon over a 2 day match (6-1, 6-7, 6-3) - it was a great match and I simply can't believe Xenofon has been playing tennis for only one year!"
A very impressive round when put into that context. Elsewhere, Tieme won his only match of the round, but for now congratulations must go to Edgar on a flawless round, can he make it 3 titles in a row next time?

GROUP TWO
Winner: Uche Ehiobu
Group two was such a strong group throughout, with every player really contributing to the round. In the end, Uche's record of 5 wins from 5 was enough to give him the win, just ahead of Ovid who won 5 out of 6. They had a cracking match against each other, while Uche needed a third set tie-break to beat Philip. Philip, along with Michael and Will was involved in a really good scrap for third place, which provided some excellent matches:
"Michael beat Will 6-2, 1-6, 9-7. It was an epic battle against Will, it went on for hours. Not to rub salt into Will's wounds, but he even had match point against me, that's how close it was. Once again I have had a blast playing in the league."
Good to hear, and a great finale for Michael, as sadly this is his last appearance in the Haringey Tennis League. He is moving to Plymouth where we wish him all the very best there and continued success in his flourishing tennis career. We do hope everyone else in the group had as good a time.  With so many close matches, and the table being so tight at the end, we really hope to see you all back for next time.

GROUP THREE
Winner: Kaleem Khand
Kaleem takes group three by a commanding 5 points, after he won 4 of his 5 matches. This included a great battle against Chris, in which Kaleem had to come from a set behind to take the match. Alex took second place after hard-fought wins over Chris, Charlie and Robert:
"Played Robert in balmy conditions last night and won 6-4, 6-1. First set was very close with an early break for Robert to go 2-0 up but a break back for me and then a late break in the set to clinch it. Second set was closer than it looks and a good match all round."
Chris and Andrew had good rounds, while intriguingly Robert was the only player to beat the winner Kaleem. However, he was unable to complete more than 2 matches, so who knows what would have happened had he played more. Well done to Kaleem on a really good round.

GROUP FOUR
Winner: Jo Bronte
Jo wins group four after winning all 4 of her completed matches without dropping a set. Her fifth match, against Jeremy, looked to be a thriller but was left uncompleted, mid way through the third set. Jeremy finished in second after picking up some good victories, while David and Diego also recorded wins. Jo is a deserving winner though, and can look forward to the challenges of a higher group next time!

GROUP FIVE
Winner: David Jeffrey
David had a flawless round, winning all 5 of his matches without losing a set, and he takes the group with a dominant display. Rob was not far behind, winning 4 matches of his own. Alex and Michael picked up some good wins, and had a great match against each other - Alex winning the deciding set 7-5, while Ruesham edged past Monique in a great three-setter. David was the star of the show though, and takes a deserved win.
