Golden Lane Singles: Round 3 - round over!
Monday 3 May to Sunday 27 June, 2010
Midpoint for bonus points and a FREE tube of tennis balls, Sunday 30th May
This is the league where points earned resemble the final set score of the Mahut/Isner marathon match and the round certainly didn't disappoint! It's been fun watching the results come in and watching those point tallies grow... 28, 36, 44! We are very appreciative of the time you have put into the league. Twenty matches were played across the two groups which is pretty impressive!
Please do help us spread the message about the league. We hope there will be at least one more round before the centre closes for its major refurbishment The more people playing, the more competitive each group becomes and the wider the variety of players you will have the chance to meet. The new round will run from Monday 19 July to Sunday 12 September. If you would like to play, just go to the Join Now! page. We've also attached a pdf copy of the poster - if you know of a suitable notice board, or if you'd like to stick it in your window, it would really help the league!
GROUP ONE
Winner: Shane Howat
Shane has been winning matches and friends this round - " Great fun, lots of close rallies, and break points on either side. Will play again soon. " Shane - thanks for the match," said Mark after his match (which Shane won). It was certainly an impressive run for Shane (the match with Kurosh, Shane told us "was a lot close than it looked") and he emerges the very well deserved winner of the group.
GROUP TWO
Winner: Nicola Noakes
"I'm shattered..." Nicola told us succinctly after reporting the result of her final match (against Jo, returning from injury). And well she might be! Five great wins in which she conceded a total of only ten games made her our undisputed Group Two champ, not that it was as easy as it looks on paper. Of her encounter with Harriet she said: "This was a hard-fought match on the hottest day of the year, with a lot of defensive play required from Nicola against Harriet's fast serves and topspin ground strokes." So well played Ashley and Harriet who ran Nicola closest, but it is hats off to our winner.
Because the courts are not floodlit, and to allow people to fit a match into a lunch break, matches are a pro-set. This means the first person TO GET TO 8 GAMES wins. If you get to 8-all, you play a tie break. Deuces are as normal (ie if you get to 40-all, you have to win two consecutive points to win the game) This means the first person to get to 8 games wins. POINTS AND PRIZES
You get one point for every game you win. If you win on the tie break, the score will be 9-8, so the winner gets 9 points and the loser gets 8
If you complete THREE matches by the half way mark you get FOUR bonus points and a FREE can of balls.
