The Glasgow Tennis League: Singles Round 5

The Glasgow Tennis League: Singles Round 5
Monday 15th August to Sunday 9th October 2011

It has been a great round, with some very close matches to keep things exciting! Andy Murray, who is powering ahead in the far east, would be proud. Sadly we weren't able to honour our pledge of an extra can of free tennis balls to all our players in Scotland if Andy had won the US Open, but Grand Slam success can't be far way.

Thank you all for supporting the league. We are very grateful for the hard work you put in scheduling your matches and for your efforts on court. 38 matches were played, and 14 of you earned your bonus points (which is brilliant).

GROUP ONE
Winner: James McCullough
James and defending champion Martin were neck and neck all the way until the final match, which fittingly decided the group. They entered their showdown having each won 5 out of 5 matches, knowing a win would seal the group. James edged it, and wrote in afterwards:
"It was a really competitive match. My serve won it for me as Martin outplayed me in most of the rallies, my forehand was missing in action. Martin is a class act all the way. I enjoyed the league very much and it has rekindled my interest in tennis as I hadn't played for 10 years before joining this round. I'd recommend that anyone joins as the players are a great group of people."
Martin was similarly gracious in defeat, and wrote in after the match as well:
"I would like to congratulate James on his win today and for winning the group, it was well deserved. The spirit in which the game was played made for a very enjoyable game and is exactly what I think we are all looking for from the league."
Elsewhere in the group, Dragan finished in third place after a couple of storming three-setters. He beat Keith 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, and came from a set down to win against Vance, who unfortunately had to retire at 2-1 in the third. There were also wins for Vance, Keith and Frank, but the main story was at the top, and congratulations once again to James. We hope to see you all back next time, for a similarly exciting and competitive round!

GROUP TWO
Winner: Harry McDonald
There was nothing in this group either, with just 2 points separating the top 4 players at the end of the round. Harry takes the title after winning all 5 of his matches, but he had to work particularly hard against Iain, coming from a set down to take the match in a deciding set tie-break. Alastair finished just a point behind Harry, and wrote in after a gruelling match with Iain:
"23 degrees in Glasgow! Crazy. After a set each, we had a game of 'who can hold serve', with 6 breaks in the first 8 games! At 4-4, I broke again as the heat wore us down, and served out to clinch a real tight one."
David Bryers also ended his round on 11 points, and he too reported on a three-set win:
"I beat David Robertson 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. This long match started outdoors but we had to move indoors when the rain came at the start of the second set. We both played a mixture of good shots and errors. Most of the games went to deuce and could have been won by either player. I pulled my calf muscle during the final game and was close to retiring but managed to just scrape the last few points to win the match."
Iain recovered from the heartbreak of two deciding set losses to pick up three wins of his own, while David Robertson won from a set down against Alastair. Three-setters really were the order of the day in this round, with Ruairidh beating Miranda in a final set tie-break and Andrew winning against David Bryers in three. Interestingly, Andrew won his only two matches, suggesting he could have been a real force in the group had he played a few more matches. However, we'll never know, and Harry is a worthy winner after triumphing in all of his matches.
