It has been a great little round despite the ongoing cold, with lots of matches played and a really tight group to keep things exciting!

Thank you all for supporting the league. We are, as ever, very grateful for the hard work you put in scheduling your matches and for your efforts on court. There are now over 50 local leagues up and down the country and players like you are making a real difference to grass roots tennis in the UK.

The next round of both the Gladstone and Hendon Park Leagues start on Monday February 27 and run until April 22. (We hope to have sufficient numbers to run two separate leagues this time.)

Many thanks to all those who have already joined, and if you haven’t, but would like to, the deadline for both is Friday February 24. As usual, players who have done well will be promoted (usually the winner of a group, but often the runner up too when it has been close).

And now, on to the winner...

GROUP ONE
Winner: Ali Qassim
After winning all four of his matches, Ali deservedly takes the crown in round 7, though he had to work extremely hard in all of his matches. He won a three-setter against Stanislav, while all of his matches involved a tie-break as well. It's a great effort from Ali, and he took the group by a couple of points from Zachary. Having been victorious in his other three matches, it was Zachary who sealed the runner-up spot, and he wrote in after his most recent match, against Chris:
"The second set was very close. We were playing on a damp Astroturf surface which meant that at times the ball hardly bounced."
Piotr finished third after he opened the round with a tremendous three-set win over Stanislav, but Ali is the one to take the plaudits in this round. How will he fare as defending champion in the next round?
The winner will be receiving his £20 prizes and certificates and we do hope to welcome you all back next time.

Zachary Citron bt Stanislav Vilga (Dec 4/17) 6-1, 6-3 " After a slow start from Stanislav, this match became very competitive, with Zach starting to find Stanislav’s distinctive forehand slice difficult to deal with. We were interrupted by rain with Zach leading 5-3 in the second set and deuce, and when we recommenced, Zach was lucky to win the first two points and so the match" Zach

Ali Qassim bt Stanislav Vilga (Dec 10/11) 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 "It might have been a different third set had we been able to continue playing on the Saturday as the momentum was with Stanislas who came back from being down 1-3 in the second set and again from 4-5 down, taking the second set after a tie break. Last time we played, I lost in three sets which like this match, was on the long side with lots of deuces," Ali

The weather conditions weren't so good, and strong wind made it very difficult to keep the ball in play. But in the end it was a very good match with long rallies and no easy points!
