It has been a great round, with a chunky two-thirds of all matches played and lots of competitive encounters to keep things exciting!

Thank you all for supporting the league. We are, as ever, very grateful for the hard work you put in scheduling your matches and for your efforts on court. From the feedback we get there is a growing sense of community about the Clapham Common League - and it is this blend of friendly, competitive and local tennis that is helping us make a difference to park tennis in an increasing number of venues up and down the land. Thank you.
The next round starts on Monday January 16 and runs until March 11.

Many thanks to all those who have already joined, and if you haven’t, but would like to, the deadline is Friday January 13. As usual, players who have done well will be promoted (usually the winner of a group, but often the runner up too when it has been close).

* Please note: in the next week or so, we will be reporting this quarter's qualifying matches to the LTA. A list of the matches that we think qualify will appear here by early next week. GROUP ONE
Winner: Dane Griffin
Dane marked his debut in the Clapham Common league with victory in the top group, a just reward for a great performance throughout. He won all three of his matches in straight sets, though sadly he did not get to play defending champion Graham for a potential group decider. Graham also finished with a 100% record, having played a match less. This wasn't the busiest of groups, and it was hit early on by a withdrawal. Nevertheless, Dane has proven himself to be a real force in the league, and he'll be tough to beat in future rounds!

GROUP TWO

Winner: Robert Fejer

This was an incredibly busy group, with every player completing at least five matches, and five of the eight managing to finish their round overall. That's a great effort, especially for an autumn/winter round. Robert is a worthy group winner, having been victorious in six of his seven matches, coming through titanic battles with the likes of Sean and Anton. Even in the match he lost (to Luke), he managed to pick up a set. Not far behind was Sean, who recorded five wins - he edged some fine three-setters against Tom Mees and Alfie, who finished in third place. In fact, virtually every match involving Alfie seemed to go to a deciding set, and he wrote in after squeezing past Luke:
"We were threatened by rain again! Luckily we prevailed and the wager of a free beer was enough motivation for me to bag a victory."
With so many matches played, and so many of them going to tie-breaks/third sets, this was a really competitive and evenly matched group. Congratulations again to Robert, he (and probably a few others from this group) can look forward to the challenge of group one next time!

GROUP THREE
Winner: Kirsty Jackson
In contrast, this was another quiet group, with just the four matches completed. Kirsty won two of them without dropping a set, and this was enough to give her the group overall. Nick and Colin also picked up wins, but were unable to mount a sustained challenge and it is Kirsty who takes the spoils!

GROUP FOUR
Winner: Matthew Brown
Another hectic one! Matthew just comes out on top, as one of three players who managed five wins. He picked up bonus points and a crucial set against Rory, and takes the group by a couple of points. Aside from that match against Rory, Matthew was dominant in his wins, not dropping a set in any of them. Gareth finished as runner-up after a fine round, as he won some gruelling matches. He beat Emma in three sets and wrote in afterwards:
"I was down and nearly out at 4-6, 2-4 but a quick break as we tried to find a court did the trick and I clawed my way back."
Rory was the only unbeaten player by the end of the round, and will feel hard done by to only finish in third place. He won all five of his matches, including wins against the top two, and he reported on that epic match with Matthew:
"Shame that it was a tie-break that decided the result but we would probably still be playing if not!"
Elsewhere, David made a late surge to leap into the top four, his most notable victory coming in three sets against Emma.
Well done again to Matthew on winning such a fiercely competitive group, hope to see you all back next time.

GROUP FIVE
Winner: David Rosa Casado
David was flawless throughout the round, putting in an incredible effort to win all seven of his matches. Five of these came in the opening couple of weeks, and he never looked back from there, though his match with James was very close:
"James played an excellent match, it was exhausting with some very, very long games!"
Paul and Ryan recorded some very impressive wins as they tried to rein in the leader, and both were involved in thrilling three-setters with Sarah. Ryan wrote in after his:
"It was an epic match lasting over two hours. The result could have gone either way, with both players evenly matched it became more of a test of stamina than skill."
Yet another storming group, and it is only fitting that we give the last word to David (he really did say all of this):
"Today I played my last match of the round and I managed to win it! I'm over the moon, it was great fun, I met really nice people and I can't wait to play in the next round. You guys are doing a great job putting people together to play tennis. I used to play loads many years ago but stopped playing as I couldn't find anyone to play with, you brought the excitement back to me and I want to say massive thanks for organising the leagues!"

GROUP SIX
Winner: Jayne Meyrick
Jayne's blistering start to the group gave her enough momentum to hold on at the top, as she added to those early wins with a set against Liam and a tough win over Treasa. Liam pushed hard, but was unable to dislodge the leader, despite winning all five of his matches. He came from sets down against both Jayne and Emily to win in deciders, but in the end his lack of bonus points cost him. Treasa finished third after some fine wins over Charlie and Emily, and there were plenty of really close games throughout. Jayne is a worthy winner though, and she takes the prizes.
The winners will be receiving their £20 prizes and certificates and we do hope to welcome you all back next time.
