Round one
22 August to 15 November, 2009
Thank you all very much for taking part in the first round of the
Clapham Common Mixed Doubles. I do hope you all enjoyed it.
I know the emails have been flying for months and completely
understand it’s double trouble trying to get four people on court at
the same time (as well as finding a court). But group two were
complete stars. Every couple had at least two matches, two had four
and two couples had six! So as always many thanks for your sterling
efforts and all your perseverance. I really appreciate it.
And after all that, we have some winners. They are . . .
Group two: Natalie Hurst & Eddie Tomlinson
In a very closely fought group, this finished as a tie on points
between Natalie & Eddie and Jo & Nate but as the former beat the
latter in a close three setter in their head to head, Natalie and
Eddie win.This evens things up a bit for Eddie as Jo beat him in a 3
set singles match back in round 3! Nate and Jo, singles rivals in a
previous round, also put in an excellent performance, playing six
matches in all, which crucially gave them the chance to pick up a
couple of points for sets won even in the matches they lost. In the
final reckoning, this nudged them two points ahead of Coralie and
Robert who came third (even though Coralie and Rob actually beat them
in their match)
Group one: Heather Cobb & Graham Fortune
Two straight sets wins, with the loss of no games, easily put Heather
and Graham on top here! Alas husband and wife Michael and Irene had
to pull out before they began when Michael hurt his foot (hope it’s
better now!), and like one or two others, Matthew Porsz and his sister
Rachael (who looked liked being the best player in the whole group)
never got a chance to play. Maybe another time!
