"Sharland and Firth came into this match full of confidence after winning their first match last time out but they took a little while to get out of the blocks with Firth racking up yet more double faults to add to his collection and Stan proving to be a deft touch when it came to lobbing Sharland and Firth on their numerous attacking raids to the net. Sharland and Firth did enough to take the first set though and after that really got into gear taking the 2nd set with some big returns of serve and some improved serving. Sharland wrapped up proceedings with 2 aces and one unreturnable rocket in his final service game to end an enjoyable encounter..." James

"Strong serving and equally rusty returning defined this tense season opener. The Sharland serve provided the backbone of his teams efforts in the 1st; the significant change in pace between the monstrous first and lady-like second serve proving both baffling and frustrating to Copper/Fraser in equal measure. With all those around him struggling for accuracy, Firth crucially found his range with a trademark cross court return that soon put Cooper/Fraser on their heels. The strength of Firth’s bullet ground strokes allowed Sharland to capitalise with some awkwardly exuberant net play – a combo which began to pay dividends. Despite a brave hold from Cooper late in the first, Firth/Sharland edged a tight one 6-4. Cooper/Fraser opened the 2nd with renewed vigour and a new strategy – to target Sharland’s tentative ground strokes. Firth was being denied the opportunity to unleash his beast and Sharland’s forehands were far from an adequate replacement, the strategy seemed to be working. The set ebbed and flowed, Sharland continuing to hold serve with his fast-slow combo and Firth also finding his serving range. Cooper and Fraser were serving well and using their whippy forehands to drop deep balls into the back of the court. The leading pair knew it was time to hustle; getting to the net and showing aggression on the volley to counter-act their opponents strong ground strokes. The much targeted Sharland began to ironically formulate a targeting strategy of his own, going after Cooper at the net. Firth/Sharland showed more consistency on the volley when it mattered with Cooper/Fraser blowing some great opportunities to win crucial points, which may haunt them in the latter stages of the league. This one could have gone either way, a real dog fight to open proceedings. Firth/Sharland taking it 6-4, 7-5. " Neil
